BBC Studios’ Natural History Unit (NHU) is the leading producer of wildlife programming, creating award-winning content with a world class reputation.

Our output ranges from ambitious landmarks (Green Planet, Dynasties, and Frozen Planet II) to children’s programming (Deadly Dinosaurs and Andy’s Adventures), as well as ground-breaking adventure, formatted, presenter lead, feature docs and event programming such as Endangered for Discovery, The Year The Earth Changed for Apple TV+ and the BAFTA winning Springwatch for the BBC.

We are seeking a Junior Editor to join our team. The role will provide entry-level craft editing skills and will manage and develop junior post-production colleagues.

Main Responsibilities

The Junior Editor will be a proactive and flexible member of the production team, both at base and on location. Their day to day work may include but is not limited to:

  • Pre-Edits, promos and Digital work. Creating rough assemblies of contributor sync material as well as blue chip wildlife sequences.
  • Work as assistant editor, working under the general direction of the team directors/producers and editors
  • Provide creative and delivery services to the team.
  • Overseeing a Media Management hub when on location in Africa with the filming teams, and workflow operations back in the UK.
  • Work closely with the post-production supervisor/lead in order to ensure an efficient workflow through all stages of the production process.
  • Provide and maintain required standard and quality of information and metadata across required media, platforms and systems.
  • Liaise with external post-production suppliers, and technical production stakeholders where necessary.
  • Edit Assistant training, support and line management if appropriate.
  • Provide mentoring and training of non-technical colleagues in technical post-production workflows and technologies/equipment.
Are you the right candidate?
  • A detailed knowledge of Avid Media Composer, and ideally Adobe Premiere Pro
  • Proficiency in HD, UHD, HDR and RAW workflows
  • Craft editing skills with the ability to undertake editing tasks without supervision
  • A strong aptitude for storytelling, with the ability to glean the best material from a high volume of rushes
  • A gifted eye with the potential to compose compelling, creative and full sequences.
  • Experience of sync mapping and working on Presenter-led, Ob-Doc sync programmes for broadcast, as well as a solid understanding of cutting blue chip wildlife behaviour led sequences
  • An ability to articulate and communicate creative ideas, narrative outlines and visual styles.
  • Knowledge of file-based production processes and content production systems.
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of audio and video, including digital technologies and formats
  • Experience with the television production process and broadcast delivery requirements.
  • Experience of a busy production or similar environment
  • You must have excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to remain calm under pressure, and the flexibility to adapt to changing circumstances and situations not always under our control. You will be able to demonstrate a proven ability to build strong relationships with programme contributors and collaborators and work effectively within a team.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills and the ability to apply them to operational situations.
  • Appropriate experience and resilience to cope with remote locations.
  • A clear, demonstrable passion for the natural world and wildlife is a must, together with a thirst for knowledge and an eagerness to learn.
  • This role will require long periods away from home. When not working on location, the role will be Bristol based, embedded within the production team.

Desirable

  • Demonstrable knowledge of BBC output and that of competitors.
  • Experience of Apple hardware, Network Attached Storage (NAS) and Digital Asset Management systems.
  • Experience of supervising or line managing staff.
