ABOUT THE JOB

This is an excellent opportunity for a graduate psychologist who plans to apply to train as a fully qualified educational psychologist. The post offers training and supervision by a qualified Educational Psychologist so that joint and independent work can be undertaken in settings with children and young people and their families and other professionals.

You will support Newham’s Educational Psychology service in delivering evidence-based, high quality psychological services to children, young people and families. You will assist EPs in providing targeted early intervention services and ensure they are delivered to the highest standards – the Assistant EP will be heavily involved in the early, evidence gathering stages of these processes. You will also work with schools and early years settings to ensure that programmes for children and families have the maximum impact. You will share our commitment to integrated working, delivering child and young person focused services and constant improvement.

The Educational Psychology Service provides the statutory work in support of EHC plans and also offers a traded service to pre-school settings, schools and colleges. There are opportunities within this role to further develop the contribution that EPs makes to our children and young people, schools and settings. A high priority is given to induction, supervision, reflective practice and continuous professional development and to maintaining a high level of professional skill.

You have an Honours Degree in Psychology which provides graduate basis for chartered membership of the British Psychological Society. You have firmly made the decision that you wish to become an Educational Psychologist.

You greatly value inclusion and have experience working directly with children and young people in a diverse, urban community. You are excited about developing a range of experience and skills in preparation for training as an Educational Psychologist. We’re looking for people who have a genuine interest in a restorative, relationship based practice, drawing on psychological models to inform your approach to building effective relationships with children, families and communities.

You are keen to hone your developing consultation and assessment skills and already have a strong knowledge of relevant legislation. You have high working standards and are conscious of your own professional development; you want to join a developing local authority with a view to building a career and growing alongside us. You want the best for our children and young people – this is what drives you.

About Us
The London Borough of Newham is located only 5 miles east of London. It is well positioned with access to all major networks in London and the south east. It is well connected by public transport with, bus, tube and DLR. When the Crossrail service opens it will call at Custom House close to our council offices and also Stratford station and from there to central London. The London City Airport which serves major European cities is located at Royal Albert Dock. Newham has the youngest overall population in the country. It was one of the six host boroughs for the 2012 Summer Olympics and contains most of the Olympic Park including the London Stadium. It has a thriving arts quarter with the Theatre Royal Stratford East offering excellent entertainment for all the family. There is the University of East London which has two campuses in Newham, one in Stratford and another next to the regenerated Royal Albert Dock. It also has a large Westfield shopping Centre in Stratford which has all the major retailers there.
Newham has a large housing regeneration programme that will build over 1,000 new council homes by 2022.
