Job Description

Applications are invited for the above permanent full-time post working in Campus Services directorate and in particular with colleagues within the Campus Wellbeing team (which incorporates Corporate Health, Safety and Environmental management) and the Estates Management team.

The University is looking for a committed, knowledgeable and innovative person to coordinate, scope and plan for significantly reducing the institution’s carbon footprint emanating from energy and water use and reducing energy demand.

This new position will be part of a team of professional staff who are committed to reducing the University’s adverse carbon impact and energy use. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to develop the role to reflect and build upon their own strengths and to make a real difference, seeing projects through to completion and beyond.

The post holder will build upon the wealth of existing knowledge and data from within the department and which is available across the University, including amongst academic colleagues.

The University will, over the coming years, be investing several million pounds on improving its estate, increasing sustainable electricity and heat generation, and reducing energy use and our overall adverse carbon impact on the environment.

This is a really exciting role, that can make a real difference; it offers an opportunity to investigate, learn, consult, create and deliver towards a sustainable future.

Candidates should possess an Undergraduate degree or NVQ Level 6 in relevant subject area or possess equivalent professional experience in a similar role.

The ability to communicate in Welsh is desirable for this post.

This role will be located on campus at Bangor. Through our Dynamic Working framework, there will also be the option to spend some time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance, which will be discussed further with candidates at interview.

Purpose of the Job

This role will be building and infrastructure focused and will emphasise on assessing building utility usage characteristics to identify opportunities for reducing water and electricity consumption, improve energy and thermal efficiency and to reduce our dependency on gas and oil heating. The post holder is not expected to have detailed knowledge of each area and aspect of this exciting role, though they will have the ability to understand the challenges and the opportunities that are ahead of us - as the University strives to reduce adverse carbon impact and achieve Net Zero 2030/50.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

    Research and identify consultants, contractors, advisers and other individuals and organisations to assist you in producing and evaluating carbon and energy reduction schemes for individual buildings, and for the wider estate.
    Identify opportunities for increasing sustainable heating, cooling and electricity generation.
    Develop funding proposals for projects that will then be submitted to the University and Welsh & UK Governments and work with colleagues to continually improve our design specifications for new buildings and for future major refurbishments.
    Help guide carbon neutral / carbon negative specifications of new builds and refurbishment projects.
    Investigate and interpret knowledge and data from multiple sources, and then look to identify and work with various colleagues, specialist consultants and contractors to produce deliverable schemes, building by building and across the whole built estate.
    It is anticipated that, in due course, you will lead on or be a part of the delivery of many of those schemes, evaluating their success and identifying opportunities to further improve energy use & carbon reduction for the future.
    Seek opportunities to reduce mains water consumption and wastewater sent for treatment, and for replacing high energy consuming equipment, improving electrical and heating controls, phasing out gas and oil, improving insulation, installing ground and air source heat pumps, solar, wind and other improvement opportunities.
    Generate, with the help of colleagues, a list of priority interventions and the production of Carbon Reduction Plans that will make a real difference.
    Connect with external employers, learning from their experiences, and generate your own innovative ideas.
    Participate in Higher Education Sector discussions on carbon reduction initiatives and, where appropriate, champion your work and the work of the University in reducing energy demands, increasing use of sustainable heating and cooling
    Promote how Bangor University are reducing our adverse impact on the environment.
    Play a central role in delivering the University’s transition to a net zero estate, including identifying how this can be achieved.
    Prepare compelling business cases and supporting the implementation of appropriate schemes.
    Seek funding and partnership opportunities for energy efficiency and carbon reduction schemes, renewables, and wider innovation to achieve net zero.
    Support the development of technical solutions and strategies to support Buildings and Infrastructure achieve energy reduction and net zero carbon targets.
    As applicable, coordinate or project manage to deliver projects, ensuring delivery to agreed timelines and within budget
    Understand reports and technical information.
    On specific projects, work with the University’s Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor for Sustainability to support their initiatives and strategies for continually improving sustainability performance across the student and staff community and at the institution.

    The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

Essential

    Undergraduate degree or NVQ Level 6 in relevant subject area or possess equivalent professional experience in a similar role.

Experience/knowledge

Essential

    A good knowledge and understanding of energy saving opportunities and current thinking for reducing energy use and carbon impact.
    Experience of identifying energy and / or carbon reduction opportunities
    Possess problem-solving skills and ability to identify opportunities for use of latest technologies and best practice to deliver energy and carbon reduction in our buildings.
    Able to produce deliverable and costed plans.
    Experience of working, or clear ability of being able to work, with specialist consultants and contractors on projects, understanding information and any advice provided.

Desirable

    Experience of producing informed schemes that deliver real and positive outcomes.
    Evidence of having produced business cases for investment.
    Experience of finding and making grant/funding applications.
    Able to think ‘outside the box’ and create new concepts, positively pushing boundaries and historical perceptions to embrace new technology and thinking.
    A building engineering background.
    Practical experience in successfully developing and implementing carbon reduction plans or strategies.
    Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of energy/carbon reduction developments, carbon accounting, carbon market, methodology changes, and wider energy/sustainability issues.
    Experience of undertaking a similar role elsewhere
    Ability to create and deliver presentations to peers, funders, and others
    Member of EMA, IEMA or other related professional body
    Understanding of HE environment.

Skills/Abilities

Essential

    Ability to critique & evaluate data.
    Ability to project manage and experience of monitoring progress of schemes to a high-quality delivered standard.
    A good communicator, including creating professional reports on proposed projects and opportunities, which are underpinned by robust evidence.
    Possess a positive attitude about influencing change.
    Demonstrable Computer skills including MS Office suite.

Desirable

    The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh is desirable for this role. If applicants are not able to speak / write in Welsh at present, there are many opportunities to learn if the successful candidate wishes to do so.
