The Department of Computer Science is continuing a major expansion and this full-time post is available immediately at Lecturer (Assistant Professor), Senior Lecturer and Associate Professor levels.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a vigorous and rapidly growing department in the Faculty of Environment, Science and Economy in the University of Exeter. We have active research programmes in Artificial Intelligence, AI for Healthcare, Machine Learning and Computer Vision, Evolutionary Computation and Optimisation, High Performance Computing and Networking, Social and Environmental Data Science, Human Dynamics and Urban Systems, and Cybersecurity. We welcome applications from people in these and other core areas of Computer Science.
The University is a partner of the Alan Turing Institute and there are several Alan Turing Institute fellows in the department. Many members of the department are active in the University’s interdisciplinary Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. We contribute to the interdisciplinary EPSRC CDT on Environmental Intelligence as well as MSc programmes in Advanced Computer Science, Advanced Computer Science with Business, Cyber Security Analytics, Data Science, Data Science with Artificial Intelligence and Urban Analytics. The Department offers undergraduate MSci and BSc programmes in Computer Science and in Data Science together with a Degree Apprentice programme in Digital Technology Solutions.
The role
The purpose of this post is to:
- enhance the Department’s research profile by developing an independent research programme, as well as collaborating with researchers in your group, the Department and the wider University;
- generate research income at a level commensurate with the post and subject norms;
- engage in and develop teaching on undergraduate and masters programmes;
- contribute to the management of the Department.

For all posts you will have:
- A PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics or a related discipline or equivalent professional experience.
- An independent, internationally-recognised research programme in a relevant active field of research.
- An active approach to inter-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary research.
- Enthusiasm for delivering high quality undergraduate and masters programmes.
- Strong connections and projects with business and community partners
- Involvement in projects which develop impact.
For a Lecturer post you will have:
- A strong record in attracting funding for research, or demonstrable potential to attract such funding.
For a Senior Lecturer post you will have:
- A strong record in attracting funding for research.
- Hold a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or equivalent
- A strong potential for research leadership.
- A track record in refereed publications.
- Relationships with external organisations and funders/ and knowledge and experience of key sectors or business challenges.
For an Associate Professor post you will have:
- Clear evidence of research leadership at an international level.
- A strong record in attracting funding for research.
- Hold a Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy or equivalent.
- A sustained record of effectiveness in undergraduate and postgraduate education.
- A track record in high quality refereed publications.
- Relationships with external organisations and funders/ and knowledge and experience of key sectors or business challenges
