UHB Pathology are looking to recruit an experienced, forward thinking 8a biomedical scientist, operational laboratory manager, with excellent organisational skills. You will join the management team in this large Cellular Pathology Laboratory which runs across Heartlands, Good Hope, Solihull and Queen Elizabeth hospital sites. You must be HCPC registered, possess a Masters Degree or equivalent FIBMS or Higher Specialist Diploma, with experience of managing in Cellular Pathology. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to shape the future of this dynamic UHB Cellular Pathology team as we expand to support increasing activity. The post holder will join a management team and swork with other UHB Pathology specialties. The Department works with labs across the Birmingham and Solihull 'BSol' network and this includes current setting up of digital pathology and imminent new LIMS implementation; experience in these areas and effective use of Pathology data to improve pathology services are advantageous.
The Department supports an extremely wide range of Cell Path specialties and specimen types.
Knowledge or experience in improving histopathology, cytopathology, electron microscopy, muscle and musculoskeletal services, MOHS, andrology, mortuary services and wider laboratory experience is desirable. Search for UKAS lab 10141 for our range of accredited testing
- The post holder is the lead specialist for their operational section and works both independently and as part of a management team
- Oversee and fully document method and laboratory equipment evaluation
- To organise and co-ordinate the implementation of new equipment and techniques.
- Keep up to date with changes in laboratory practice and developments.
- Organise and actively participate in sectional and departmental reviews and meetings. This includes effective resolution of action items and delivery of lab projects, with timely escalations where required.
- Proactively contribute to the corporate and Laboratory objectives e.g. improving lab TAT's.
- Provide direction and advice to Senior BMSs, Specialist BMSs, Biomedical Scientists, Trainees, Medical Laboratory Assistants and administrative staff to ensure that policy and procedural compliance is maintained.
- Comply with local and national policies for the safe, secure and confidential processing, storage and disposal of patient and other laboratory information.
- To manage the efficient use of finances, consumables and staff resources within Cellular Pathology and take corrective action in consultation with the Head BMS.
- To ensure effective staff management including ensuring rotas, training, absence management and appraisals are all in place and in keeping with Trust policies and procedures.
- Communicate patient information that is of a sensitive, highly complex and technical nature
