Job Description

Job summary

The Radiotherapy Department based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham has a vacancy for a Paediatric & TYA Specialist Therapeutic Radiographer. This role will be evenly split as a Senior Therapeutic Radiographer working with the department to deliver radiotherapy. The other half of the role will be working with the Lead Paediatric & TYA Specialist Therapeutic Radiographer to deliver outstanding care for young patients needing radiotherapy at University Hospital Birmingham as part of the Midlands Paediatric Radiotherapy Service. The purpose of the role is:

  • To work with the paediatric radiotherapy team and the wider paediatric and TYA oncology multi-disciplinary teams to provide support and care to patients and their families
  • To support the development of the new Midlands Paediatric Radiotherapy Service in partnership with Nottingham University Hospital
  • To work alongside the research and clinical trials teams to improve access to clinical trials in radiotherapy for paediatrics and TYA patients
  • To support the referrals of patients for proton beam therapy in the UK and Overseas
  • Work clinically at least 2 days per week

We are committed to having state of the art technology for our patients and have a variety of highly specialised radiotherapy equipment including 2 CT scanners, CyberKnife, two Tomotherapy HD units, HDR, deep x-ray and five linear accelerators. A new Tomotherapy Radixact is currently being commissioned and will open in May 2023.

Main duties, tasks & skills required

Applicants must hold a BSc (Hons) in Therapeutic Radiography or equivalent and have experience working as a therapeutic radiographer.

In addition to responsibilities for as a Paediatric and TYA Specialist Therapeutic Radiographer, the post holder will also be involved in the day-to-day treatment and imaging of patients in the treatment or pre-treatment area, including student training support. The post holder will take a role in the current and future development of staff and services within Radiotherapy.

Professional development is high on our agenda and we have a commitment to Radiographer led services, with role advancement offered or actively being developed. All staff will be required to have a flexible approach to working hours to accommodate service demands as there is a requirement to routinely cover extended day working, Monday to Friday between 7.30am to 8pm. In addition there is a requirement to work bank holidays and some occasional weekend working in line with NRAG recommendations. There is also a requirement to participate in the weekend and bank holiday on call service.

Qualifications

Essential

Qualified Radiographer (eg. Diploma of the College of Radiographers - Therapy / Degree in Therapeutic Radiography)

Current state registration

Attendance of recent relevant post graduate courses and study days including assessment of undergraduates

Evidence of interest and commitment in working towards further professional development and qualification

Experience

Essential

Experience of working clinically as a radiographer on full range of radiotherapy equipment which will have led to the acquisition of sound and well established theoretical and practical knowledge and successful experience of working and learning in multi-professional teams

Experience in assessing and teaching trainee radiographers

Specialist knowledge of cancer pathology and disease patterns

Specialist knowledge of clinical radiotherapy including potential radiation risks, acute patient side effects and their effective management

An active awareness of relevant legislation, national cancer standards and professional guidelines

Knowledge of paediatric cancers and their management.

Knowledge and awareness of proton radiotherapy
