You will earn at least £21,029 per annum pro rata in this Apprentice role as we are a Voluntary Living Wage Employer.

Our Street Lighting maintenance Team is looking to employ a Corporate Apprentice (Level 3) based at Brindley Road Highway Depot, CF11 8TX, to contribute to our Service helping us to maintain over 40,000 street lights, illuminated signs and assets across the City’s highway network. By keeping our street lighting equipment in good working order, we ensure a safer environment for all those using our highways.


About the job


In this Corporate Apprentice (Level 3) role you will learn to:

Plan and carry out electrical maintenance activities on the highway street lighting assets through gaining knowledge and understanding of techniques, tools and materials unsed in the electric sector. This will include fault finding, test and inspect, identify and replace failed components, carry out emergency response activities. Upon completion you will be able to prioritise work demand and work as part of a small team while providing services to wider multidisciplined teams. You will develop communication skills – written, verbal, digital and technical – that are required to carry out the duties of the role efficiently and effectively.

Full training will be provided and our Team will help and encourage you to develop in the role and you will be encouraged to take on a variety of duties. You will receive supervision and on the job training and will have a named mentor to support you to deliver an efficient and effective service in a positive, customer-focused manner.

The Corporate Apprentice & Trainee Scheme also provides opportunities to enhance your transferrable skills to help support your career progression.

Although this post will be site based, many of our teams have moved to online and homeworking working and you will be encouraged to develop the skills to support this. Should homeworking be required, you will be given the necessary equipment however, you will need to arrange your own internet connectivity (some support may be available to help with this).

Under the corporate flexible working policy, a “Work/Life Balance” working pattern will be applied to the post over a two week period and the may be opportunities for weekend working.

This role includes a Welsh Government Apprenticeship Framework Qualification in Building Services Engineering – Electrotechnical Installation at Level 3. *Please check your eligibility to apply for this role using the information listed in the Additional Information section below and in the Person Specification for this role.

You should show a willingness to learn and be comfortable in a learning environment. You will attend college to complete the relevant qualification in your trade and be expected to complete this within the correct timescales.

Our Corporate Apprentices gain valuable experience working for the largest Council in Wales. Whilst we cannot guarantee that the appointed candidate will go on to secure a further role at the end of this initial contract, they will be supported and encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities available within our organisation, in order to progress their career.

The associated qualification will be delivered by Cardiff and Vale Collage at either Barry or Cardiff campus and candidates must be able to arrange own transport.

Graduates are eligible to apply for Apprenticeship roles offering a minimum of a Level 3 Apprenticeship Qualification and provided their degree is in a different subject.
