Description

Under direction, to coordinate and manage the sterile processing program and to ensure that staff provide high quality sterile and disinfected instrumentation, supplies and equipment infection control in compliance with local, state, and federal requirements.

The incumbents will monitor the performance of team members to ensure proper sterilization methods and procedures are performed. A successful candidate would possess a valid Certification from The Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) [formerly the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM)] or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution as a Sterile Processing Technician and/or Sterile Processing Manager and have experience in developing compliance and productivity standards to ensure departmental goals are met. The ideal applicant would also possess a valid Certified Endoscope Reprocessing (CER) certification, valid Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) as well as Certified Healthcare Leadership (CHL) certification.

Typical Tasks

  • Manages, organizes, and schedules staff work flow and assignments to ensure appropriate staffing to achieve goals of the sterile processing management plan;
  • Supervises, evaluates and develops systems for key department processes including: ordering of supplies, storing/organizing inventory, delivery of case carts, inspecting, decontaminating, sterilizing, and cleaning of reusable items, disposing of non-usable items, correct packaging and labeling, proper loading and unloading of sterilizers, monitoring and maintaining records of sterilization cycles, assembling and packaging;
  • Provides supervisory support during the evening and night shifts;
  • Monitors department financial performance to budget and addresses negative variances;
  • Evaluates and addresses operational issues and the quality of sterile processing services, including writing and updating policies and procedures;
  • Assesses skill set/competency, identifies educational needs and is responsible for the training and evaluation of sterile processing staff;
  • Develops and maintains budgets;
  • Manages ongoing staff development and training;
  • Participates in daily surgery huddles and regular staff meetings;
  • Develops overview of department workload, sterilization effectiveness; (OR) Develops and implements ongoing continuous improvement practices for sterile processing department;
  • Ensures compliance of sterile processing services with industry standards and regulations for sterile processing;
  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned and required.

Employment Standards

Sufficient skills, knowledge and experience to demonstrate possession of the knowledge and abilities listed below.

Certification from the International Association of Healthcare Central Services-Materials Management (IAHCSM) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution as Sterile Processing Technician and/or Sterile Processing Manager is required.

Training and Experience Note: The required skills, knowledge and abilities would be acquired through a Bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university in Health Services Management, Applied Health Sciences, Health care Administration or a related field that included coursework in Operating Room or Sterile Processing management
AND
three (3) years of professional experience in sterile processing or operating room procedures, two (2) years of which was in an administrative or supervisory capacity.

OR
An Associate's degree from an accredited college in Surgical Technology, Central Services Technology, Sterile Processing, Allied Health Sciences or a related 30 unit certification program with relevant coursework in sterile processing procedures, AND five (5) years of professional experience in a sterile processing or operating room procedures, two (2) years of which was in an administrative or supervisory capacity.
Knowledge of:
  • Principles and processes of supervision, staff development, organization, administration, fiscal and program management and administrative record-keeping methods;
  • Hospital operations and organizational structure;
  • Principles and applications of a hospital information system(s) as it relates to sterile processing;
  • Sterile processing procedures for surgical equipment in an acute care hospital;
  • Safety and infection control practices;
  • Regulatory agency mandates and guidelines including OSHA, FDA, CDC, AAMI, EPA;
  • Basic bioburden reduction strategies;
  • Types and uses of: detergents, enzymatic, lubricants, and environmental disinfectants;
  • Processing equipment's function and operation (e.g. washer decontaminator, washer/sterilizer, ultrasonic cleaner):
  • Manufacturers' instructions for equipment and/or medical device (MSDS guidelines for all staff);
  • Preparation, packaging and utilization of surgical instruments;
  • Problem solving and resources to obtain guidance/information;
  • Critical thinking (e.g. analysis, synthesis, and evaluation of information);
  • Communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Principles and Practices of Sterile Processing Technology;
  • Program Development and Program management.
Ability to:
  • Supervise a complex multi-shift sterile processing system;
  • Communicate effectively with professional-level hospital personnel in problem-solving situations;
  • Analyze, interpret, apply and implement state and federal rules and regulations;
  • Maintain complex records;
  • Resolve sterile processing problems;
  • Work effectively as a member of a management team in a large health care organization;
  • Communicate both orally and in writing.
