Introduction to the role

Full Fact is looking for a new Social Media Editor to help tackle the spread of misleading claims, hold those responsible to account, and engage and grow our audience of supporters.

Every day our team of fact checkers and campaigners find, check and challenge false claims. Your job will be to make our voice heard online and in daily news debate, creating content to mobilise hundreds of thousands of Full Fact’s social followers, and reach many millions more.

Bad information ruins lives, whether it’s shared by politicians, journalists or influencers online. No one should settle for it. You’ll win support and make change happen through creative, engaging content that brings our fact checks, policy and advocacy work to life, and asks people to take action with us.

Since the 2019 election Full Fact has reached millions of people through videos, podcasts and other creative work. You’ll produce content and decide how best to use our channels to reach our target audience ahead of the next election, and help us make sure those who make false claims in public can’t get away with it.

You’ll manage the organised, effective social media operation we need to set and react to the daily news agenda, working alongside colleagues in press, fact checking, and supporter campaigns to plan content ahead of time, and work reactively when needed.

You might bring experience in designing social graphics or video production, but first and foremost you’ll be an excellent writer and storyteller. You’ll know how to adapt these skills based on target audiences and social media channels.

Your approach to content will be driven by an in-depth understanding of social platforms, and you’ll know how to evaluate and communicate success to the wider team. There will be opportunities to complement Full Fact’s organic reach with online advertising to help us target and grow our audience.

You’ll thrive in a fast-paced environment. You’ll never compromise detail and accuracy, particularly when it comes to Full Fact’s reputation for impartiality, but know how to translate complex stories into engaging, accessible content.

This is an exciting time to join Full Fact. With hundreds of thousands of existing social media followers, and a reach of many millions more, you’ll be working as part of a successful communications team alongside creative specialists in brand, press and campaigns. We’re looking for someone who shares our ambitions and pushes us even further.

Our reputation matters. As well as looking to build and reinforce it, you’ll be personally committed to Full Fact’s standards as an independent, impartial charity. With responsibility for some of our most viewed content, you must be able to take a nuanced, fair-minded and even-handed approach across a wide range of topics.

If you are interested in applying but not sure you have all the skills, please do apply. We are open both to supporting learning on the job and to rearranging tasks within the team to suit the skillsets of the best applicant. We are happy to talk about flexible working, and we are open to part time or job share applications for this role as part of an ambitious and supportive team.

How the application process will work

We want to see you at your best to understand your strengths and the contribution you could make at Full Fact with strong support, including for your learning and development. We also want to make sure that we use your time well during this process and don’t ask for more from you than we need to. We will make any reasonable adjustments we need to make to this process to help ensure you can perform at your best. For more information about this before applying, please contact jobs@fullfact.org.

The interview panel will be Will Moy, our CEO, Ross Haig, our Head of Communications, Steve Nowottny, our Editor, and Laura Dewis, our Chief Operating Officer.

The process starts off with an anonymised covering letter and CV. This will be read by at least two people to produce a shortlist for interview.

The first round interviews will be a phone (not video) interview, lasting no more than half an hour, at a time that’s convenient for you. We will record it so at least two people can review each interview to decide who we invite back for the second round. The recordings will be deleted at the end of the process.

The second round will include a structured interview and a timed task which assumes no prior knowledge. The task can be completed prior to the interview, at a time that most suits you.

The interview will be with the full panel by video and last no more than an hour. We’ll tell you everything you need to know to prepare, including anything we’d recommend reading in advance.
