Specialist Eating Disorder In-patient Unit - Occupational Therapy Assistantwith opportunity to apply for OT apprentice training.
Band 3 -Based at The Kinver Centre, Stafford
Are you interested in working of the field of eating disorders? Would you like to develop your skills and knowledge about people who suffer from severe eating disorders?
An exciting opportunity has arisen to work closely with our in-patient team and in particular our Occupational Therapist in working with our in-patients who predominately suffer from severe Anorexia Nervosa.
Occupational Therapy Assistant with opportunity to apply for OT apprentice training, 37.5 hours per week, with flexibility to meet service need.
We are looking to find an individual who is creative, motivated and able to work within a multi-disciplinary team who will provide assistance to our Occupational Therapist.
The role will involve a significant amount of rehabilitation activities such as shopping, meal preparation and cooking as well as facilitating some individual / group activities for our in-patient group. Experience of working on the ward is preferable but experience of an OTA post is not required.
You will be based at the Kinver Centre in Stafford, working shift patterns that will include working weekends. We are committed to continued professional development and therefore training and clinical supervision will be provided.

- To work as part of a team providing an Occupational Therapy service for the clients and carers referred to the designated area of work. This will involve implementing and modifying programmes which encompass areas which will include self-help, leisure, communication, independent living, educational and work skills. The Senior Occupational Therapy Assistant will also observe and feedback any relevant information concerning clients and carers to the Supervisory Occupational Therapist or team. These interventions may be carried out through group or individual sessions. To use appropriate verbal and non-verbal communication skills and observation of the client and their environment.
- To be part of a client centered service where the needs of the individual will determine the types of intervention. This will mean that the post holder will work across a variety of therapeutic activities, eg cooking, shopping, snacks out, relaxation technique (this is not an exclusive list).
- To ensure that materials / stocks are ordered in line with plans for future / new group needs and developments.
- To support service users to practice their skills / re gain their confidence within the community which may be done in conjunction with other members of the multidisciplinary team. The staff member will not be expected to undertake these duties alone until the competency to do so has been confirmed and an assessment of risk has been completed by the qualified staff / team.
- To implement treatment programmes according to individual needs and in conjunction with qualified staff implement the discharge process. This will entail the use of encouragement, motivation, negotiation reassurance and training skills as well as discussing with clients / carers their progress, as appropriate.
- To work as part of a team and in conjunction with other professionals, statutory agencies and any associated service provision for the client or carer.
- To develop a professional relationship that is conducive to the client reaching their full potential, within stated goals.
- Where applicable to engage with families, carers and advocates with a view to supporting them in maintaining consistency with the work undertaken by the service user.
- To be involved in relevant meetings / reviews related to client’s treatments and service.
- To work within multidisciplinary team / multi-agency in conjunction with the qualified Occupational Therapist.
- To receive clinical and managerial supervision to maintain best practice. This will include discussion of caseload, reflective practice, and the ability to receive and act on constructive feedback.
- To ensure effective and appropriate face to face, telephone, electronic and written methods of communication are maintained at all times. Clinical excellence can only be achieved through good communication channels with all involved in the client’s care.
- To develop and implement skills pertinent to the area of work, for example manual handling, equipment management and installation, keyboard skills and driving.
- There may be requirement to work with clients and carers who may display challenging and aggressive behaviour or to work in adverse environmental conditions.
Other Duties
- To undertake training and development as agreed during induction. To undertake own continuing professional development by demonstrating an on-going reflective learning style in the workplace.
- To work as a member of the MDT to understand the roles of other staff, to liaise with other staff and agencies respecting the ethos of the setting.
- To ensure occupational therapy equipment is kept clean and in a safe condition; that it is correctly stored and the procedures for recording materials and equipment including stock control, sale of goods and the handling of money are followed using agreed protocols.
- To ensure all Trust policies and procedures are implemented and adhered to within the area of practice. Issues pertaining to these policies should be clearly communicated with the line manager.
- To contribute to the delivery of an Occupational Therapy service in line with national, professional and local standards. This is done whilst working collaboratively and under the guidance of qualified Occupational Therapists.
- To provide accurate service, client and workforce activity information as required by the Trust, under the direction of the Occupational Therapist. This will require the use of written and electronic communication according to protocols in line with local and national standards.
- To undertake other associated duties linked to the job and grade, to reflect the evolving nature of the service.
- To be willing to work flexible hours if necessary, which may include evenings and weekends. (This will be agreed between manager and worker).
- To be aware of security issues relating to clients and carers, self, colleagues, base and in the community, to ensure security is not put at risk.
- To adhere to the Trust and Professional guidelines on confidentiality and to communicate any issue to their senior manager.
- To be responsible for own, and others, health and safety, reporting all issues to the line manager and working within The Trust’s Health and Safety policies and the Health and Safety at Work Act.
- To participate in a review of the OTA role and be willing to adopt ant necessary changes identified during this process.
- To respect the individuality values cultural and religious and diversity of clients and carers contributing to a service to meet these needs.
