Social Media and Digital Content Officer

The post holder will be part of the team delivering the Modern Foreign Language (MFL) Mentoring project, which has been funded by Welsh Government since 2015 to arrest and reverse a 20-year decline in the number of young people opting to study a modern foreign language at GCSE in Wales (please see the additional information section for more project detail).

This role is designed to support the large-scale operations of the MFL Mentoring Project, particularly in relation to their social media and website activity, to support core functions of the project.

The role is suited to someone who enjoys taking the initiative, being creative and is passionate about supporting our young Welsh learners. In particular, the role will suit someone who enjoys a varied task load and will thrive in a busy, enthusiastic team. The role will require some travel and weekend working.

This role is part-time (28 hours), available immediately, and is fixed term until 31 March 2024.

Salary: £24,715 - £28,929 per annum, pro-rata for hours worked (Grade 4)

Job Description

This job requires the role holder to:
  • Support the design and delivery of external and internal communications campaigns via social media, ensuring strategic and reactive priorities are fully communicated to a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Support the management of the project’s social media channels, including monitoring, addressing enquiries and ensuring data from social media is reflected in the planning and decision-making of the wider team.
  • Develop a social media campaign across all partner unviersities to support the recruitment of mentors, collaborating with key stakeholders where necessary.
  • Lead on proofing and editing digital content across all streams of the project, particularly in relation to digital learning content.
  • Manage the website (WordPress hosted) and design and implement a strategy for continuous website development in line with senior managers and to meet the evolving project aims.
  • Support the editing of digital learning resources to be published on the website. This will include taking briefs from team members and developing the digital content to support the learning resources. This will involve a graphic design element.
  • Support the design and delivery of impactful and engaging recruitment campaigns via social media.
  • Create original high quality digital content, including videos, for use across the project’s multiple social media platforms and as part of the project learning resources.
  • Be able to use digital content skills to develop creative and engaging outcomes from written project briefs.
  • Plan, create and deliver effective digital content that engages target audiences and meets the needs of key users: secondary school teachers and school learners.
  • Manage the project website independently, strategising to maximise impact and use as part of broader campaigns.
  • Provide professional advice and guidance to the team on developing engaging and relevant social media content, using judgement and creativity to suggest the most appropriate approach
  • Work in an editorial function to review and approve content produced by the team in readiness for publication on the website. Act as quality assurance.
  • Monitor and report on trends and data from social media and the website, proactively advising on changes to delivery and content according to feedback and/or trends on social media.
  • Respond in a timely and accurate fashion to queries raised via our social media channels and proactively strategise on engagement of stakeholders, planning in advance who you want to target, why and the success of targeting.
  • Establish working relationships with key contacts, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Directorates and outside bodies as required.
  • Plan and deliver specific small-scale projects, co-ordinating project teams created as required
  • Take responsibility for resolving issues independently across all aspects of digital content creation and digital, including social media and the website, but not limited to it.
  • Use social media monitoring platforms to contribute to monthly communications evaluation reports for review by senior management.
  • Manage your own learning and development in association with your line manager.
General Duties
  • Ensure that an understanding of the importance of confidentiality is applied when undertaking all duties.
  • Undertake a variety of administrative duties to support the project and the social media team.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education
  • NVQ 3/A-Levels or equivalent
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Proven experience of writing and design engaging digital content for a wide range of audiences, promoting/marketing services in a quantifiable manner and eliciting a desired change in behaviour(s).
  • Able to demonstrate professional knowledge of communications and stakeholder engagement, enabling them to give advice and guidance to both internal and external customers and to lead on partnership engagement.
  • Able to demonstrate specialist knowledge of communications/social media applications/platforms and development of strategies to create impactful campaigns.
  • Excellent organisational skills, including evidence of ability to manage a project, work unsupervised to deadlines and planning and setting priorities of own work.
  • Experience of developing and managing website content, front end and back end.
Customer Service, Communication and Team Working
  • Excellent communication skills, with proven ability to convey information which may require careful explanation or interpretation in a clear and accurate manner, both orally and in writing to a wide range of audiences.
  • Evidence of ability to monitor campaigns and work proactively to implement changes.
  • Ability to work as an effective team member, providing advice and guidance to other team members where necessary.

Desirable Criteria
  • Degree or an equivalent qualification or equivalent work related experience
  • Fluency in Welsh, written and oral
  • An interest in modern languages and/or a knowledge or languages other than Welsh or English
  • An understanding and knowledge of developments in the education system in Wales, particularly the Curriculum for Wales
  • Experience of working within or in connection to education and/or languages, and/or with an international remit, with a clear understanding of the type of messaging required for stakeholders across education sectors
  • Project Management qualifications (eg. Prince 2).

Additional Information

The Modern Foreign Language (MFL) Mentoring project has been funded by Welsh Government since 2015 to arrest and reverse a 20-year decline in the number of young people opting to study a modern foreign language at GCSE in Wales, in support of the aims and ambitions of Welsh Government’s Global Futures strategy. The project works across Wales working with over 140 secondary schools across Wales, 100s of teachers, 5 partner universities, over 150 university students spanning university and subject areas, and engaging with over 6000 secondary school learners each year. The project also has partnerships that extend throughout the UK including but not limited to Ulster University, Stirling University, Leeds University and Warwick University.
