Job Description
We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, well-motivated individual to join our team in the Clinical Chemistry department as a Biomedical Scientist. The successful candidate should have laboratory experience and knowledge of a variety of procedures and analytical techniques relevant to Paediatric Biochemistry.
Appointment will be at Band 5 or 6 depending on experience. Band 5 candidates must have completed the IBMS Registration Portfolio and be HCPC registered as a “Biomedical Scientist”. Band 6 candidates must have successfully completed the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Clinical Chemistry.
The Clinical Chemistry department at Sheffield Children’s Hospital comprises of three main sections; acute, metabolic, and new-born screening. The successful candidate would be expected to work in all sections with initial placement and subsequent rotation into each section being dependent on the successful candidate’s experience as well as service demand. Full training being provided. Participation in all aspects of analytical work including an out-of-hours on-call service, as well as weekend and bank holiday working is expected, with adherence to the ‘Standards of Proficiency’ as defined by the Health and Care Professions Council. Good communication and interpersonal skills are required as well as the ability to produce accurate and precise work.
The department provides a capillary phlebotomy service, and the post-holder may be trained in order to assist with provision
- Participate fully in all aspects of the analytical work of the department on a rotational basis.
- Provide an accurate and timely laboratory testing service in support of patient care.
- Provide support to the MLA, MTO, and trainee BMS staff in the absence of more senior Biomedical Scientists.
- To participate in the laboratory 24hr / 365 day service through participate in the on-call and Saturday morning rotas.
- Provide back-up to the phlebotomy service.

- To participate fully in all aspects of the analytical work of the department on a rotational basis.
- To carry out a wide range of highly specialised laboratory procedures of varying complexity, urgency and clinical importance.
- To input confidential patient information into the Telepath 2000 laboratory computer system ensuring accuracy of patient demographics and tests requested.
- To record and technically authorise test results to be used in support of patient care.
- To ensure appropriate sample turnaround times are met and to phone through all urgent and abnormal results which may have an effect patient care.
- To ensure all tests are performed in accordance with established protocols.
- To ensure all methodologies meet the required performance and quality standards.
- To have delegated responsibility for equipment maintenance, monitoring and troubleshooting in liaison with the Chief/Senior Biomedical Scientists.
- To organise the weekly and annual on-call rotas, Saturday morning rota and weekly laboratory rotas in liaison with the Chief Biomedical Scientist (Acute Section).
- To assist the Chief/Senior Biomedical Scientists in assessing stock levels and monitoring of laboratory health and safety.
- To assist the Chief/Senior Biomedical Scientists in the review of Standard Operating Procedures.
- To provide support to the Phlebotomy, MLA, MTO, and trainee BMS staff in the absence of more senior Biomedical Scientists.
- To assist in the training of both clinical and technical staff of various grades.
- Accurate telephone communication of laboratory results and specimen information to clinical and technical staff both on site and in other hospitals.
- To provide support in the day to day running of the specimen reception area, ensuring correct barcode labelling and matching with request forms.
- To maintain skills in capillary phlebotomy and provide cover for the MLA phlebotomy service to Sheffield Children’s Hospital and Jessop Wing of the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. This will involve collection of capillary blood samples for laboratory analysis from children and infants of all ages and in all states of health.
- To assist Clinical Scientists and Senior Biomedical Scientists with technical aspects of audit, research and development
- To assist in the laboratory 24hr / 365 day service through participate in the on-call and Saturday morning rotas (including provision of phlebotomy.
- To adhere to the Standards of Proficiency for Biomedical Scientists as defined by the Health and Care Professions Council.
- To follow agreed protocols and policies seeking advice where appropriate from more senior staff.
- To work in an efficient and timely manner and to be adaptable to change.
- To work in a safe manner in accordance with departmental and Trust Health and Safety policies.
- To contribute to care, maintenance, and security of the laboratory premises and equipment.
- To demonstrate a positive attitude to the work of the laboratory, colleagues and service users.
- To respond to requests for information in a polite, helpful and concise manner.
- To maintain confidentiality and conform with the Data Protection Act.
- To work to quality standards for all aspects of the service as defined by the Pathology Directorate Quality Management System (QMS).
- To participate in all staff rotas in line with service needs.
- The post-holder will participate in an annual Personal Development Review/ appraisal process as well as all necessary mandatory training.
- As part of the PDR process the post holder's involvement and contribution to Quality Management will be reviewed along with their understanding and compliance with the current, relevant Trust objectives.
