Job Description

We are looking to appoint an experienced part time Children’s Technical Instructor to support the treatment of babies and children who have developmental delay or disabilities, in community settings across mid and East Cornwall.

The Children’s Community Therapy Service is a specialist multidisciplinary team of Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Dieticians.

Our skilled support staff, which will include this post holder, work closely with the clinicians to support delivery of therapy treatment.

The Children's Community therapy team, is a friendly team of 40+ Clinicians, support workers and clerical team delivering therapy to Children and families throughout Cornwall and the IOS over many different settings.

We are a close and supportive team with regular continuous professional development opportunities with regular Multidisciplinary Disciplinary Training t and specific support staff training sessions.

This post will sit within the East team primarily community Based, but there is also a large degree of hybrid working from home when appropriate to do so.

This post is open to Individuals with the skills described within the Job description. However if you are very passionate about working within this area and you meet the majority of the Essential criteria but not all, we would also consider a Band 3 developmental post.

This is a part time position working 22.5 hours per week.

Under the guidance, and at the request of senior colleagues, to undertake skilled support work, monitoring and adjusting equipment along with implementing therapy care plans for infants, children and teenagers with developmental delay or physical and/or learning disabilities in the community.

To work unsupervised in the community, in educational establishments and patients’ homes, in Children’s Community Therapy Service (CCTS) bases, liaising with teaching staff, parents and carers.

To assist Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Dieticians in assessing children and implementing treatment, including assessments for specialist therapy equipment, wheelchairs and orthoses, and treatments including hydrotherapy, Serial Casting, Short Sensory Profiles, postural management clinics and dietetic support work.

To assess for, prescribe and make minor adjustments to children’s standard wheelchairs and buggies.

To support children on the caseload of Children’s Community Therapy Dieticians by carrying out dietetic monitoring, growth and weight monitoring, food diary management, meal observation and management of stock and resources.

To contribute to the delivery of care for children with life limiting and life threatening disorders.

Protect from harm and effectively and safely employ treatment interventions and practises to the benefit of patients referred to the service. Practise only within area of competency and abide by all Common and Criminal Law and Human Rights Legislation.

Under the guidance of therapists, assess for and deliver evidence based, effective holistic care for babies, children and teenagers with movement disorders and neuro-muscular conditions including those with severe physical and learning impairment or disabilities and challenging
behaviour.

Assist therapists to carry out assessments, and contribute to the planning and delivery of appropriate treatment interventions, and evaluation of the child’s progress towards therapy goals.

Provide care and assistance for children undergoing treatment including the transfer of children to and from class rooms in special schools, dressing, self help and personal hygiene needs.

With support from the prescribing therapist, instruct and guide children and their families in a range of therapy treatments and interventionsincluding the use of special seating and therapy equipmentand the use and application of orthoses.

Support children, teenagers and their families and carers with their therapy care plans, in the home and school environments.

Communicate appropriately with individuals to motivate and encourage them, their families and carers to work towards treatment goals.

Record treatment interventions in accordance with RCHT policies and procedures.

Prioritise and manage workload to ensure effective time management.

Contribute to the collection of performance data and any other statistical information that may be required for service performance, audit and development purposes.

Be responsible for arranging specified clinics, and if required, cancelling appointments.

Continually risk assess all activity and advise Team Lead of potential risks. Report incidents via the RCHT incident reporting system.

Work in collaboration with members of multi-disciplinary and multi agency teams, CCTS, RCHT, the Departments of Education, Social Services and other partnership bodies to provide seamless child and family centred management and care and contribute to the development of
children’s services.

Participate in clinical meetings, multi-disciplinary assessments, case and child protection conferences and non-clinical meetings at the request of therapists.

Demonstrate ongoing competency to practice by evidence of mandatory training, completion of CCTS formal competencies, and reflective practice.

Actively participate in the Personal Development Review process, and in clinical supervision.

Be responsible for their own actions, safe practice and well-being of colleagues.

Be responsible for the correct use and care of property belonging to RCHT and Education Authority. Keep the departments tidy and free from hazards, cleaning equipment regularly and ensuring it is free from damage and in a fit condition for its purpose.

Hold a current driving licence and have unrestricted access to a vehicle with full business insurance cover.

Have the stamina and agility to be able to carry out the physical nature of the post including manual handling tasks, including those requiring the hoisting of patients, the adoption of and ability to sustain static postures, while supporting patients undergoing physical therapy at floor level, in sitting, standing and during the use of specialist equipment, standing and walking frames.

Work in hydrotherapy departments in hot and humid conditions, working both on the poolside and in the water under the guidance of the physiotherapist.

Have the dexterity and fine motor co-ordination necessary to carry out specific tasks and treatment interventions including serial and orthotic casting, splinting and the application of orthoses and adjustment of therapy equipment to meet the patients’ needs.

Have the ability to focus on a task despite frequent interruptions.

Be emotionally able to support families in times of acute emotional distress and to seek support from colleagues after such an event. If confronted by verbal abuse or threatened with physical aggression, to seek support and report in line with RCHT incident management.

Deal with exposure to unpleasant odours, dirt, noise, urine, sputum, saliva, faeces and vomit in a professional manner.

Carry out all reasonable requests and duties that may from time to time be required by senior staff within RCHT. This may include temporary secondment to support other teams within the CCTS

To contribute to the efficient running of the departments by communicating verbally, by email and by phone with parents and carers, multiagency colleagues and the wider Children’s Community Therapy Team.
To participate in, and contribute to service development.
