Job Description

Job Purpose
The Data Analyst will support the work of the Planning, Insight and Analytics team at the University of Glasgow. The team sits at the heart of University Services and provides data and analysis to support decision-making at the highest level. The Data Analyst will work in close collaboration with team members to deliver strategic insight and performance reports. The job holder will be responsible for a wide range of insight generation on (but not limited to) Learning & Teaching strategy, Research strategy, Student Equality & Diversity monitoring, benchmarking and league table analysis in addition to horizon scanning on key events that may impact on the Higher Education sector and our position.
The post requires the holder to be comfortable extracting and analysing data, explaining patterns, developing analytic models and effectively communicating the stories found within data.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Deliver statistically robust insight and analysis into all areas of the University’s activity, such as learning and teaching metrics, the student journey through continuation and graduation, research quality, grant awards and bibliometrics
2. Support the University governance and management structures by providing reports and insight to committees that allows us to understand the experience of our students, graduates, staff, our activities relating to research, and other operational aspects.
3. Act as the focal point and subject matter expert for one or more dimensions (e.g. league tables, equality and diversity monitoring) of the analysis provided by the Planning, Insight and Analytics team
4. Responsible for communicating across the University at all levels the insight and outputs of analysis undertaken.
5. Engagement with key stakeholders and working collaboratively with colleagues to investigate and highlight areas of best practice and poor performance.
6. Establish and maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the University’s academic provision and outputs to be able to accurately prioritise, inform and present integrated analysis.
7. Compile and translate data into engaging data stories that identify key messages and trends, ensuring that analysis is appropriate for each audience – ranging from senior management to school staff.
8. Work collaboratively with colleagues across the Planning Insight & Analytics function to use the most appropriate technology to carry out, present and issue analysis and insight across the university. Contribute to the wider Planning Insight & Analytics strategic direction.
9. Represent the team at meetings, external groups/conferences and seminars to keep up to date with national developments and gain and share information/knowledge of working practices in the higher education context.

Knowledge/ Qualifications
Essential:
A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar or number of different roles. Or Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 9, (Ordinary Degree, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4), or equivalent (including professional accreditation with relevant formal training), and experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s).
A2 Knowledge of analytical techniques.
Desirable:
B1 Knowledge of higher education guidelines and policies.
B2 Knowledge and experience of University and HE Sector/developments.
Skills
Essential:
C1 Excellent interpersonal, organisational and communication skills.
C2 Drive, enthusiasm and a high degree of personal effectiveness.
C3 Accuracy and attention to detail and ability to handle large volumes of data.
C4 A strong understanding of probability and statistical concepts.
C5 Strong data analysis skills, including data preparation, pattern identification, data visualisation and storytelling.

C10 Presentation skills and ability to adapt delivery to suit audience needs.
Experience
Essential:
E1 Experience of working with data and producing a range of data analysis.
E2 Experience of working with data visualisation / business intelligence software (e.g. Tableau, PowerBI, QlikSense, Business Objects).
Desirable:
F1 Previous experience in similar analysis role.
F2 Experience of using data transformation and science software / languages such as R, Python, SQL or Alteryx.
Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 7, £38,474 - £43,155 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours per week) and open ended.
