Job Introduction

BBC Studios’ Natural History Unit (NHU) is the leading producer of wildlife programming, creating award-winning content with a world class reputation.

Our output ranges from ambitious landmarks (Green Planet, Dynasties and Frozen Planet II) to children’s programming (Deadly Dinosaurs and Andy’s Adventures), as well as ground-breaking adventure, formatted, presenter led, feature docs and event programming such as Endangered for Discovery, Prehistoric Planet for Apple TV+ and the BAFTA winning Springwatch for the BBC.

BBC Studios are making a 10 x 30 minute landmark series for a third party Broadcaster for delivery in July 2024 which has a strong emphasis on VFX throughout the series. We are looking for a Post Production Lead to join the edit team.

Main Responsibilities

The Post Production Lead will provide advanced technical advice and operational support across the entire post-production process, from ingest to delivery.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities

  • Manage the VFX/Graphics workflow between production, graphics provider and post house.
  • To be main point of contact and holder of a VFX tracker for close managing of all media passing between production, graphics provider and post house.
  • To work at a senior and advisory level with post house and graphics provider to ensure workflow complies with the technical specifications from the broadcaster.
  • To oversee and ensure deliverables comply with the specifications required by the broadcaster.
  • Advise production staff on all aspects of ingest, delivery and related post production requirements and lead with the operational planning and preparation for nominated production(s).
  • Advise and lead on the suitability and compatibility of camera acquisition formats, and their impact on any post-production workflows.
  • Be responsible for the planning and development of post-production workflows.
  • Provide mentoring and training of colleagues in technical post-production workflows and technologies/equipment.
  • Overall accountability for Media Management, secure rushes backup and adherence of team to established protocols
  • Liaise with external post-production suppliers, and technical production stakeholders
  • Manage and develop junior post-production colleagues, including performance reviews.
  • Working within the parameters of a budget
  • Researching, advising and sourcing equipment purchases ensuring the team is across the latest technology & developments.
  • Organise the preparation, set-up and maintenance of editing and ancillary equipment for productions.
  • Responsibility for quality control of all media and materials to ensure broadcast level standards are maintained.
  • Provide and maintain required standard and quality of information and metadata across required platforms and systems.
  • Ensure all processes and workflows are aligned with the commissioned delivery specifications.
  • Accountability for the correct and timely delivery of all additional BBC Studios deliverables, in line with the BBC Studios Retention policy.
  • Ensure the appropriate people are kept informed and consulted as necessary through all stages of the production process
  • Work closely with the line producer and post house to ensure the edit and post production schedule is kept on track
Are you the right candidate?

You should have:

  • Experience of a wide range of HD, UHD, HDR, RAW and VFX workflows
  • Knowledge of file-based production processes and content production systems.
  • Understanding of the fundamentals of audio and video, including digital technologies and formats
  • Ability to communicate with confidence and act assertively when required
  • Experience with the television production process and broadcast delivery requirements.
  • Ability to plan, organise and administer complicated operational processes and to enter. metadata accurately into relevant business or broadcast systems.
  • Experience of a busy production or similar environment and the ability to work calmly under pressure.
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with a wide range of people at different levels.
  • Advanced problem-solving skills and the ability to apply them to operational situations.

Desirable

  • Demonstrable knowledge of BBC output and that of competitors.
  • Experience of Apple hardware, Network Attached Storage (NAS) and Digital Asset Management systems.
  • Experience of supervising or line managing staff.

Package Description

Band: C
Contract type: fixed term, 16 months
Location: Bristol

Working pattern: Mainly based at an BBC Bridgewater House and external Post Production house

Start date: late April/early May 2023

Interviews are expected to be held in person or via Zoom in mid April.

The majority of our staff work in an Agile way, balancing their time between home and a BBC Studios base, as best suits the work they do and their personal circumstances.
