We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced individual to join our company as a Legal Operations Leader. Working as a Global Legal Operations Leader in the Global Legal Team your primary focus will be to support and work closely with the Global General Counsel to ensure delivery of the Legal team's goals and ambitions aligned to Arup's Strategy. This role requires the development and implementation of a Legal Operations Strategy to assist the Legal team to improve efficiencies and the service offering within the wider Arup business.

As the Legal Operations Leader, you will play a critical role in overseeing and managing the legal operations function within our organisation. You will be a key member of the leadership team assisting the Global General Counsel directly, where your demonstrated experience working alongside key stakeholders, Region Leadership, and senior management will deliver high level legal support, and business shaping projects, contributing to the long-term success of Arup whilst driving operational efficiency, optimising legal processes, and enhancing the overall legal department performance.

Accountable to: Global General Counsel

Responsible for: The operations and projects of the Global Legal Team. Must be able to work with colleagues from all levels to achieve a common aim whilst working across different time zones.

Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Legal Operations Strategy:

    • Develop and implement the overall legal operations strategy aligned with Arup's goals and objectives.
    • Identify opportunities to improve legal operations efficiency and effectiveness and devise strategies to address them.
    • Collaborate with senior management to align legal operations initiatives with broader business objectives.
  • Process Improvement and Optimisation:

    • Analyse existing legal processes and identify areas for improvement and automation.
    • Develop and implement standardised processes, workflows, and best practices to streamline legal operations.
    • Continuously evaluate and optimise legal operations to increase efficiency and productivity.
  • Technology and Tools:

    • Oversee the implementation and management of legal technology solutions, such as contract management systems, e-billing platforms, and document management systems.
    • Stay updated on emerging legal technology trends and tools to drive innovation within the legal department.
    • Collaborate with the Digital Technology function and other relevant departments to ensure effective integration and utilisation of legal technology.
  • Financial Management:

    • Assist the Global General Counsel in budget planning and monitoring for the legal department, including tracking expenses, forecasting, and cost control.
    • Develop and implement financial management processes to improve budgeting, invoicing, and vendor management.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting:

    • Collect and analyse data related to legal operations, including metrics, performance indicators, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
    • Prepare regular reports and presentations on legal operations performance, trends, and recommendations for senior management.
  • Vendor Management:

    • Collaborate with the procurement department to evaluate, select, and manage external legal service providers.
    • Assist the Regional General Counsels with establishing and maintaining relationships with external vendors to ensure high-quality and cost-effective legal services.
  • Compliance and Risk Management:

    • Develop and implement processes to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
    • Collaborate with the legal team to identify and mitigate legal risks and support the implementation of effective risk management strategies.

To generally assist the Global General Counsel in maintaining the Legal function as a strategic partner to all other functions within the organisation.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in law, business administration, or a related field.
  • Experience in legal operations or a similar role, preferably in a corporate legal department with a strong knowledge of legal processes, systems, and technologies.
  • Proven track record of implementing process improvements and driving operational efficiency.
  • Proficiency in legal technology platforms and tools with familiarity with compliance and risk management practices.
  • 'Key-shaped' skills with deep subject-matter expertise in a number of areas; confident in advising on complex areas.
  • Significant experience of problems and lessons learned and ensuring that the level of communication can be embedded across the firm.
  • Strong people management skills and experience of managing staff at all levels.
  • Commercial ‘savvy’ and with deep sector/industry knowledge.
