The University of Exeter

We are a member of the prestigious Russell Group of research-intensive universities and in the top 150 universities in the world (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023 and the 2022 Academic Ranking of World Universities released by Shanghai Rankings).

Our research income in recent years means we’re the fastest growing UK Research University with some of the world’s most influential scientists, and we seek to answer some of the most fundamental issues facing humankind today. More than 99% of our research is of international quality and our world-leading research impact is growing faster than any other Russell Group university (2021 Research Excellence Framework). We are using the power of our education and research to create a sustainable, healthy and socially just future. Our shared purpose and vision continually moves us forward to make a difference to our people, our communities, our partners and the world around us. Read about our world leading research on Green Futures and how we are transforming education for a changing world. We are located in a beautiful part of the country and Exeter (a fast growing tech hub) is one of only a few UK cities to have been designated as a UNESCO City of Literature.

The Global Systems Institute (GSI)

The Global Systems Institute is a thought-leading, action-oriented research centre developing transformative solutions to global challenges. It is rapidly becoming one of the largest institutes in the world focused on developing transformative solutions to global challenges. The overarching question guiding the Global Systems Institute’s endeavour is: How do we achieve a flourishing future for a projected 9 to 11 billion people as an integral part of a life-sustaining Earth system? The Institute aims to better predict global changes through understanding the interactions between the climate, natural ecosystems, human social and economic systems, and the built environment. Our scientists apply that understanding and modelling capability to identify transformative solutions to the global challenges faced by humankind, engaging societies and providing training, data and skills so that together, we can create a better future. We draw upon world-renowned research expertise, creating an interdisciplinary environment which addresses each of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Research ranges from climate modelling and understanding climate change tipping points through to plastic pollution in marine environments and how we might empower change makers to adapt current practices to address the challenges we face.

The Global Systems Institute has a leading track record in high-impact research. It is judged to have five of the most influential climate scientists in the UK. We had lead authors on all three Working Groups of the IPCC 5th and 6th Assessment Reports. We’re leading contributors on 4 of the 11 top climate papers in 2022 for news and social media attention. Led by Professor Pierre Friedlingstein FRS, we also host the internationally renowned Global Carbon Budget Office which provides an authoritative annual assessment of carbon emissions, sources and sinks.
