Job Description

Overview:
Join us and be part of a mission-driven, independent publisher. You’ll work with a diverse group of people who share a passion for empowering researchers, educators, and institutions to shape the future.

About
Sage:

Sage is a global academic publisher of books, journals, and library resources with a growing range of technologies to enable discovery, access, and engagement. Believing that research and education are critical in shaping society, Sara Miller McCune founded Sage in 1965. Today, we are controlled by a group of trustees charged with maintaining our independence and mission indefinitely.

Our guaranteed independence means we’re free to:
  • Do more – supporting an equitable academic future, furthering disciplines that drive social change, and helping social and behavioural science make an impact
  • Work together – building lasting relationships, championing diverse perspectives, and co-creating resources to transform teaching and learning
  • Think long-term – experimenting, taking risks, and investing in new ideas

About our
Team:

The Hybrid Journals Editorial department is a thriving team of intelligent, highly productive people who are passionate about research. We are responsible for the management, development, and growth of a large portfolio of valuable, high-quality journals. We work closely with external editors, society partners, and internal colleagues to drive the success and long-term sustainability of the program.

  • An excellent relationship manager, ability to build positive collaborations with colleagues and external stakeholders?

  • Able to manage a variety of projects within tight time pressures in a dynamic environment?

  • Ability to identify, advise, and act appropriately on ethical or legal questions relating to publication? For example: publication misconduct, libel, or copyright.

  • Proficient in standard IT packages, including Microsoft Office?

Your new role:

  • Actively manage journal editor performance, establishing and implementing best practice with regard to manuscript submission, peer review process, revision and resubmission policies, and optimal editorial board function. Undertake recruitment of new editors or replace editors where necessary.

  • Actively manage the profitability of assigned portfolio of journals, with a view to maximining revenues and controlling costs. Implement activities with other departments and external partners to ensure action taken where necessary to make improvements to financial performance.

  • Provide information and advice to journal editors and partner societies to help them improve the quality of content published in their journals. Compile and assess key data and metrics, using this data to inform recommendations on each journal’s development strategy.

  • Successfully negotiate editor and society contract renewals, produce profit and loss statements, prepare draft contracts and lead contract approval process through to contract signature.

  • Lead journal editorial board meetings and represent Sage at conferences, where appropriate.

  • Liaise with other departments to ensure that the journals are produced, marketed and distributed in an appropriate way and within acceptable costs.

  • Where required, be responsible for handling acquired titles from contract through to publication by Sage by coordinating with other departments to ensure necessary actions are completed on time.

  • Support the Publisher / Senior Publisher / Executive Publisher as required with departmental projects and tasks.
