Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our outstanding and expanding team at Nottingham Children's Hospital as a Senior Clinical Fellow in Neonatal Services. These opportunities are for Fixed Term positions to assist with maintaining and improving our maternity and neonatal redesign project and Tomorrow’s NUH.

Applications are invited for four posts as Senior Neonatal and QI Fellows commencing August 2023 for a period of 12 months initially, with the possibility of an extension for a further 12 months. With the approval of the MNR expansion project we need to significantly increase the workforce and transform our service provision and bring our current staff on the transformation journey. Successful applicants will have an exciting experience working as a middle grade neonatal doctor in Nottingham Neonatal Service, and also have opportunities to be involved in Quality improvement projects or research.


Main duties of the job

These posts will help with safe transition to the newly expanded Neonatal intensive care unit at Queens Medical Centre, which is due to open in 2024.

This experience should leave candidates well placed for a successful application to join a national training scheme in Paediatrics, or to prepare for GRID applications in Neonatology during a break from Paediatric training. It would also provide the opportunity to revise and enhance neonatal skills post-CCT in preparation for Consultant posts.

We provide care for tertiary level neonatal care for premature babies and their families at Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital, we are the north hub in the East Midlands for neonatal intensive care. We are proud to offer both medical and surgical intensive care for extremely premature and very sick infants, as well as having an integrated outreach team in place to support babies and families once they return home.

Relocation costs up to £6000 will be available for suitable candidates, alternatively we may be able to support funding to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Patient Safety or Quality improvement alongside this post, and would be happy to discuss this at interview.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

There are numerous opportunities to gain experience in Neonatal Intensive Care Medicine as part of the clinical component of work, including extreme prematurity, stabilisation and transport of neonates with cardiac conditions and after PDA ligation, care of neonates with surgical conditions including gastroschisis and NEC, therapeutic hypothermia for hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy, nephrology shared-care cases of complexity, and parallel planning with palliative care.

The transport service runs a parallel rota to the neonatal service, supported by a number of the Neonatal unit doctors, and training opportunities in neonatal transport can be facilitated. The progression to independent transport practitioner would be supported by an extensive induction programme and would be subject to attainment of appropriate competencies for safe and effective neonatal transport.

  • MBBS or other recognized equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCPCH Part 1
  • NLS Provider

  • The ability to take up the post during August 2023 would be desirable. MRCP (UK) or equivalent

  • Minimum of 4 years post graduate experience
  • Experience of working in Neonatal medicine

  • Experience of UK Hospital systems
