Job overview

The Radiotherapy Physics Section of Medical Physics is responsible for providing a clinical scientific service to the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust Oncology Department.

Function include: carrying out patient radiotherapy treatment planning and checking; advising clinical staff on the physics of radiotherapy; measuring patient received doses and radiotherapy treatment equipment output; ensuring the safety of patients and staff in an hazardous environment which includes potential exposure to high levels of ionizing radiation; ensuring equipment is operating safely and effectively, investigating complex faults; and the evaluation, selection, procurement, installation and acceptance testing of equipment.

We are seeking to appoint a HCPC registered clinical scientist specializing in radiotherapy physics to participate in all the work of the department (including treatment planning, dosimetry, QA, and brachytherapy). The successful applicant will have HCPC registration as a clinical scientist or will be on a formal training scheme to achieve registration by October 2024. Anyone appointed pre-registration will be paid in accordance with Agenda for Change annex 21 until registration is achieved.

Working for our organisation

Radiotherapy in Nottingham is a well-equipped department treating patients in the Nottinghamshire area. We provide paediatric radiotherapy and stereotactic radiosurgery for the East Midlands. SABT for all indications is a routine service. Major equipment includes 6 Elekta linacs (1 Agility, 5 Versa HDs), 2 Canon Aquilion Exceed wide bore 4D CT scanners as well as superficial, contact therapy, and brachytherapy treatment facilities. Treatment planning is carried out with RayStation, OMP and Monaco.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will participate in the routine scientific and administrative work undertaken by Radiotherapy Physics. This will involve radiotherapy treatment planning, brachytherapy, and dosimetry. In all these duties, the post-holder will undertake and take responsibility for operator duties (under IRMER (2017)) which he/she is trained for and authorised to carry out. A high standard of health and safety must be maintained in accordance with the health and safety policy of the department/hospital. The department seeks to provide a high quality service to patients and other departments.

If the post holder is not on the HCPC register of clinical scientist on appointment they will be paid according to Annex 21 of the Agenda for Change terms and conditions – i.e. at 75% of the top of Band 7- until HCPC registration is obtained

  • Disclosure and Barring Service: Your post maybe subject to a DBS check which incur a cost dependent on the level of check required (£41.90 for enhanced and £21.90 for standard). I agree to reimburse Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust the cost of a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check if it is required (by deduction from first month’s pay). Should I decide to withdraw from my job offer, I agree to reimburse Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust the cost of the DBS check undertaken by cheque or other agreed method.
