Job Description
We have an exciting opportunity to join our Safer Handling Team as a Safer Handling Trainer working within the Directorate of Education, Research and Innovation (DERI).
We are looking for a dynamic self-starter to support the implementation of our moving and handling strategy. You will be instrumental in the development of the service, providing advice, support and training directly to colleagues across all of our Trust sites.
This is a challenging role which requires someone who has a passion for education and moving and handling. You will deliver Safer Handling training across multi-professional groups within the Trust, to ensure they are safe, competent, and compliant with current legislation, national and local guidelines.
You may currently be in a Key Trainer role or have experience in patient and load moving and handling practice. It is essential to have experience of delivering teaching sessions, and an enthusiastic interest in the safe practice of moving and handling. If you do not currently hold a Moving and Handling training qualification, you will be expected to achieve this within the first year in post. Full support and funding will be provided by the Trust.

- Administration of the Medical Appraisal and Revalidation system
- Development and delivery of Information Technology skills and Technology Enhanced Learning
- Management of the Education and Simulation learning environment

JOB SUMMARY
To provide a flexible approach to teaching delivery, facilitation and evaluation of patient and inanimate load safer moving and handling training. This may entail evening and weekends to support the whole workforce, as necessary.
Provide an advisory service to managers and colleagues on moving and handling issues when requested.
To support the Directorate of Education, Research and Innovation Strategy (DERI) and Education Plan for the organisation.
The post holder will be expected to work closely with a variety of service providers and promote the prevention of work-related ill health caused through poor moving and handling practice. They will work in collaboration with the Safer Handling Lead Trainer and Safer Handling Practitioner to address work issues/projects and to have a good understanding of roles and scope of practice of the multidisciplinary team
To support the production of safer handling training reports against Trust agreed targets.
To ensure there are clear learning outcomes identified and the return of investment of all learning activity is measured, recorded and reported.
Working towards the reduction of musculoskeletal injuries, the post holder will be required to promote patient independence, minimal lifting, use of equipment and ergonomic changes to minimise risks to patients and colleagues and ensure safe, personal and effective care.
MAIN DUTIES
- To assist in the delivery and evaluation of evidence-based learning programmes in safer moving and handling
- To assist with the development and teaching delivery of additional training programmes as necessary such as core, essential and clinical skills
- Physically capable of demonstrating good practice
- Promote patient independence, minimal lifting, use of equipment and ergonomic changes to minimise risk to colleagues and patients
- Develop and implement appropriate learning methodologies to create an inclusive learning environment for all
- Document the training provided and maintain accurate records and information systems
- Demonstrate knowledge of relevant legal influences in the field, an understanding of the ergonomic principles involved, and of the risk assessment processes required
- Ability to carry out tasks that require continuous concentration over long periods such as, training, debating issues, creating risk assessments and practical problem solving
- To work with the Safer Handling Lead Trainer to develop and review evaluation processes for safer handling training and ensure training is consistently meeting the needs of the Trust standards and workforce
- Visit clinical and non-clinical areas to assist in identifying training needs and deliver specifically tailored training where appropriate under the supervision of the Safer Handling Practitioner and Lead Trainer
- Work towards reducing musculoskeletal injuries arising from work related activity
- Provide educational representation on governance and induction steering groups providing reports and action plans as required
- To consult with, encourage and negotiate change with staff at all levels to facilitate the development of safer handling training
- Contribute to the control of risk and use the incident reporting system to alert the Trust of incidents or near misses that may compromise the quality of service
- Under the supervision of the Safer Handling Practitioner and Safer Handling Lead Trainer visit clinical and non-clinical areas where complex moving and handling problems are being experienced
- Support the Safer Handling Practitioner and Safer Handling Training Lead with clinical in ward patient handling assessments
- In the absence of the Safer Handling Practitioner and Safer Handling Training Lead, take the role of carrying out initial assessment of clinical and non-clinical areas
- Assist to investigate reportable accidents
- Where required, ensure staff receive appropriate training in the use of existing and newly purchased equipment
- Assist in the delivery of other core and essential skills training programmes where required i.e., Trust Induction and clinical skills
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
- An honours degree from relevant discipline (or equivalent level of experience)
- RoSPA Level 3 Moving and Handling trainer qualification or equivalent or the ability to undertake this training within the first six months in post
- ECDL qualification or equivalent
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development
Desirable:
- A recognised healthcare qualification (e.g. Registered nurse, Physiotherapist, Occupational Therapist, Osteopath or equivalent qualification)
- Recognised teaching qualification at Certificate in Education/PGCE level or evidence of working towards this /or equivalent experience
- A recognised Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma in Back care Management/Ergonomics or working towards it • Health and Safety risk management qualification
- Membership of a professional body e.g., HCPC, NMC, IOSH,
- Membership of National Back Exchange
Knowledge and Experience
Essential:
- Working in training/ development environment
- Experience in designing and delivering moving and handling training to all levels and abilities
- Experience of working in a change environment
- Knowledge and use of recognised moving and handling equipment and techniques
- Knowledge and understanding of appropriate legislation, (Health and safety at Work etc. Act 1974, Disability Discrimination Act 1995, Human Right Act 1998, Equality Act 2010)
- Knowledge and understanding of appropriate regulations used in moving and handling (Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 and Provision and use of Working Equipment Regulations 1998)
- Understanding of and be able to use Ergonomic Principles

The post holder will be primarily based at the Royal Blackburn and Burnley General Teaching Hospitals; you will be a member of the wider Safer Handling team supporting patient and colleague safety and as such will be expected to contribute to service provision across the whole of East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust and to visit the other Trust sites as required. This is an interesting post and the work is diverse, and will suite anyone looking for a challenge.
