We are excited to be seeking an Advanced Specialist Pharmacist in Aseptic Services & Radiopharmacy to join our team.
This a unique role with 0.8 WTE spent supporting Aseptic Services as Deputy Accountable Pharmacist in a section 10 unit providing a range of products including neonatal and adult parenteral nutrition, chemotherapy, monoclonal antibodies and clinical trials, alongside 0.2 WTE supporting Radiopharmacy

Depending on the stage of your career, a diploma, PTQA or independent prescribing qualification will be funded. Practice research is also encouraged.
This post will attract a Recruitment & Retention Premia (RRP) totalling £5,000, payable upon appointment, (covering 36 months of service) in addition to a relocation allowance (subject to eligibility). The RRP payment is pro rata for part time employees.

- 0.8 WTE working as the Advanced specialist pharmacist for Aseptic Services / Deputy Accountable pharmacist and 0.2 WTE deputising for the Radiopharmacy Quality Manager
- Responsible for the provision of a high-quality patient focused aseptic pharmacy service under Section 10 of the Medicines Act 1968, compliant with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)
- To ensure the safety, quality and efficacy of medicines prepared by aseptic services through implementation of a Quality Management System (QMS) and in line with regulatory and national guidelines.
- Team leader for the aseptic services pharmacy team deputising for the Associate Chief Pharmacist Aseptics and fulfilling any delegated responsibilities.
- Act as an Authorised Pharmacist and final product approver.
- Deputise for the Radiopharmacy Quality Manager
- Undertake teaching and clinical supervision of pharmacy staff and other healthcare employees.
- Work closely with Associate Chief Pharmacist -Aseptic, Cancer and Clinical Trials on strategic development of aseptic pharmacy services.
- Develop and manage the delivery of pharmacy services to ensure efficient use of resources and systems including monitoring drug expenditure, delivery of financial savings within aseptic services.
- Work with the clinical and governance teams to develop guidelines and protocols within aseptic services.
- Undertake audits and engage with Quality Improvement and practice research projects.

- Responsible to the Associate Chief Pharmacist - Aseptic, Cancer and Clinical Trials for strategic planning and delivery of aseptic pharmacy services to patients within all service lines requiring products prepared by aseptic services.
- Support the Chief Pharmacist / Deputy Chief Pharmacist / Associate Chief Pharmacist in developing, monitoring and reporting on drug expenditure and medicines budget and the delivery of financial savings as part of the pharmacy CIP.
- Development, implementation and update of technical pharmacy policy in conjunction with the senior aseptic services team and in alignment with other stakeholders.
- Work as a member of the aseptic services and wider UHP pharmacy team.
- Monitor, review and report on medicines related incidents within aseptic services
- Provide highly specialist technical pharmacy care to patients in all service lines served by the aseptic services.
- To act as a role model as a technical pharmacist and team leader, to pharmacists, technicians, ATOs and all other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- To be a lead and role model in the field of aseptic services care locally, regionally, and nationally.
- To work towards advanced technical and clinical practice.
- To engage with Quality Improvement and practice research.
- To write and review policies and procedures relevant to pharmacy practice in aseptic services
- To act as an Authorised Pharmacist and take professional responsibility for the provision of sterile and non-sterile pharmaceuticals prepared under Exemption 10 of the Medicines Act 1968 and provide final product approval.
- To deputise for the Radiopharmacy Quality Manager
- To provide a role in maintaining the Pharmaceutical Quality System of the Radiopharmacy service.
- To oversee and manage various activities within the Quality Control Department including, but not limited to, environmental monitoring, processing of unlicensed medicines, product stability, processing of Out of Specifications (OOS) and other Quality Assurance functions.
- Approve, in conjunction with the Aseptic Services Manager, standard operating procedures for use in Aseptic Services.
- Approve, in conjunction with the Aseptic Services Manager, manufacturing worksheets and labels for new products prior to their manufacture ensuring the following have been properly considered:
- • Clinical suitability of the preparation
- Formulation
- Stability of the final product
- Storage
- Administration
- Presentation
- Monitoring
- Potential Problems
- Ensure appropriate change control processes are followed and authorise changes to any existing product/process or the implementation of any new product or process.
- Manage, with the Aseptic Services Manager, the management of “out of specifications” and product/process deviations relating to Aseptic Services, trending data, and taking appropriate action.
- With the Aseptic Services Manager, manage, lead and co-ordinate the aseptic services pharmacy team, including junior pharmacists and technicians in the provision of a safe, effective and efficient pharmacy aseptic service in accordance with local and national standards and strategy and to ensure all members of the pharmacy team are trained and competent for their roles.
- To complete aseptic verification of worksheets where appropriate
- Manage and support, the running and maintenance of the QMS, internal and external audits.
- To ensure areas of aseptic services and quality control are fully validated and the Validation Master Plan is adhered to.
- To ensure all equipment is maintained and calibrated.
- To ensure all environmental monitoring is completed.
- To be responsible for undertaking assessments of new products, or product requests, and the approval of new suppliers of products and consumables used within aseptic services.
- To investigate any possible product defects reported from within the Trust relating to Trust manufactured products.
- To ensure all paper and electronic records are compliant with data integrity principles.
- Supervise the preparation of medicinal products made under section 10 of the medicines act 1968 and ensure compliance with ‘Quality Assurance of Aseptic Preparation Services’ to provide products that are fit for their intended use:
- Ensure the initial check and preparation of medicinal products is undertaken according to local procedures.
- Undertake the final check for these products taking responsibility for the final product approval (release) of medicinal products to the patient.
- Act as an advisor to all staff if support or intervention is required.
- Be on the Trust register for the final product approval (release) of intrathecal preparations from the Pharmacy Department in line with Department of Health guidelines and Trust Policy.
- Ensure that safe and effective systems of work are followed within the unit in compliance with the COSHH (1988) Regulations.
- As part of the senior team ensure the validation and maintenance of computer programmes and systems used in patient preparation processes e.g. EMIS
- Ensure the department is fully compliant with the requirements associated with the regulation of clinical trials in the provision of aseptic products for clinical trials
- Monitor and evaluate medicines related documentation within aseptic services
- Propose policy or service changes which improve services and may have multidisciplinary and resource implications
- Configure and implement inductions for pharmacists within aseptic services and the pharmacy department with support from the Associate Chief Pharmacist Aseptic, Caner and Clinical Trials, and other Care Group Lead Pharmacists.
- Ensure that expertise within your area is seen as a resource within and outside the Trust and form working partnerships with other health and social care service providers.
- Attendance at Consultant/GP white board/MDT meetings/ward where aseptic services can facilitate improved patient care e.g. Chemotherapy Operations Group (COG).
- Promote compliance by prescribers and other healthcare staff with local/national policies and the South and West Devon Formulary.
- Manage day to day medicines queries, including face to face consultations with patients identified to have problems in medicine administration.
- Liaise with all levels of healthcare staff, patients and carers in all areas of work.
- Analysis, interpretation and monitoring of clinical data including drug levels, U&E’s, blood counts and microbiological sensitivities to guide diagnosis and drug therapy related to the service provision.
- Contribute to pharmaceutical initiatives that help with the seamless transfer of patients between different healthcare settings.
- Provide education and training to all healthcare professionals including medical students.
- Pharmacists are expected to work largely unsupervised and to act on their own professional judgement.
- Clinical roles are supported by policies and guidelines within which the pharmacist is allowed to exercise professional discretion / interpretation.
- Participate in any wider departmental rotas where needed.
