An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced band 7 uro-oncology nurse specialist to join our dynamic urology team.
The successful applicant will be involved into all aspects of care for urology oncology patients. The post holder will demonstrate extensive knowledge and experience in providing high quality of care. The role will involve working closely with all members of the MDT and the wider urology team. You would also be responsible for co-ordinating diagnostics and treatment for uro-oncology patients according to guidelines and protocols. It will also involve a holistic approach to care, supporting patients and carers through this challenging period and beyond.
We are looking for a dynamic individual with CNS uro-oncology experience and an understanding of the issues faced by patients with cancer and their carers. They will need excellent communication and organisational skills to ensure the efficient channelling of patient pathways and the ability to work autonomously. The role will also involve teaching and education of patients and staff.
This is an exciting role that will suit an experienced highly motivated and innovative nursing professional who is focused on improving the experience for those affected by cancer.
An Enhanced DBS with barred lists for both Adults & Children is required for this post

KEY DUTIES
- Co- ordination of care for own caseload of uro-oncology patients.
- Nurse – led clinics for prostate cancer, active surveillance, Renal follow up, bladder instillation, assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of evidence-based nursing care

- Support the rapid diagnostic pathways

- Excellent communication and support of patients and families / carers in situations that can be emotionally challenging.

CLINICAL & PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide first contact assessment, assist in establishing diagnosis and comprehensively assess patient.
- Manage an agreed patient caseload
- Order / undertake, interpret and act upon diagnostic tests and investigations.
- Identify, assess and triage patients ensuring smooth transition to other services as appropriate.
- Undertake specialist procedures as required by the service ie administration of intravesical treatments.
- Undertake Holistic Needs Assessment, develop comprehensive care plans, with measurable outcomes, including advice or education to other clinical staff and care givers
- Involve patients, carers and relatives in the planning and delivery of care.
- Act as an autonomous practitioner exercising excellent clinical judgement, discretion and decision making in clinical care.
- Ensure compliance with any specific regulations for example: drug administration, record keeping and data collection within own area of work.
- Participate in nurse led clinics using relevant protocols.
- Initiate medication/ treatment reviews in liaison with Consultant within area of work.
- Refer complex cases and all those for specialist investigations to Team leader or for Consultant appointment as appropriate.
- Liaise with primary and secondary care Clinicians as required and other agencies involved with care delivery
- Ensure appropriate services are put in place to support management of condition at home, supported by the multidisciplinary team as required.
- The post holder will abide by legal requirements and statutory rules relating to practice and promote and maintain standards of professional practice in accordance with The Nursing and Midwifery Councils (NMC) Code and Professional Conduct and Scope of Professional Practice
- Develop and maintain required specialist clinical skills in the assessment and treatment of patients within the area of responsibility.
TEACHING & TRAINING RESPONSIBILITIES
- The post-holder will contribute to teaching and education programmes in order to impart specialist knowledge, advice and support to colleagues, patients, carers and relatives.
- Provide support to patients, allowing them to develop self-management skills as appropriate to their condition.
- Facilitate an appropriate learning/practice environment for students providing direct supervision and training to students and new starters.
- Support nursing colleagues in their continuous professional development including peer supervision.
- Gain feedback from learners about the effectiveness of teaching and training and use this to improve provision of education
LINE MANAGEMENT/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervision of members of staff as required by the service including appraisal, and performance management.
- Deputise as required by team leader / senior staff in team.
- Authorising the use of equipment or products according to standard financial instructions.
- Monitor the use of financial resources and assist senior team members in achieving efficiencies where appropriate.
- Collect, collate and report activity data to key stakeholders, producing regular formal reports as required.
- Evaluate service delivery against key performance targets, National Quality Measures, identifying areas for improvement and initiating change.
- Implement appropriate HR processes such as sickness/absence management
RESEARCH & AUDIT
- Monitor standards of care and participate in the improvement of patient care through benchmarking/audit/research.
- Disseminate research and audit findings through presentation to professional groups and publication.
- Comply with policies, procedures and guidelines relevant to own area of work.
- Participate in the collection and collation of essential data items appropriate to the service.
- Support the team/ Care Group in collating and presenting relevant evidence and documentation in preparation for internal e.g. quality ward round and external assessments such as CQC and NHSLA.
- Contribute to Serious Untoward Incident Reviews (SUI’s), Patient Safety Incidents (PSI) complaints and litigation claims when required.
- Attend relevant governance meetings as required.
- Submit activity data/annual report as requested
SERVICE IMPROVEMENT
- Support designated area of responsibility in modernisation and implementing new ways of working.
- Undertake and participate in specific projects as required.
- Promote patient and public involvement in activities in specialist area leading to service improvement.
- Utilise evidence gained from professional network groups to inform practice and service improvements
