Job Description
This is an exciting opportunity for physiotherapists seeking an orthopaedic Band 6 position working in a well-supported Centre of Excellence.
This post is based in elective orthopaedic surgery at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.
The post offers the opportunity to rotate through orthopaedic specialities including Sarcoma surgery, limb reconstruction surgery, enhanced recovery hip and knee pathways and general orthopaedic wards including spinal and shoulder surgery.
There is a well established Physiotherapy Research Unit based at the NOC. Staff are encouraged to be actively involved in research.
In more detail, the rotations are 12 months in duration:
Sarcoma surgeryand general orthopaedic surgery, supervision of Band 5 and assistant
General orthopaedic surgeryincluding spinal and haemophilia surgery, supervision of a band 5 and assistant
Hip pathway– working closely with the surgical team on the enhanced recovery pathway
Short stay ward– enhanced recovery for knee replacement surgery as well as a wide range of day cases and short stay patients, supervising 2 band 5s
Bone infection unit– working in a national centre for bone infection.
The role also includes supervision of students, taking an active role in audit in each area.
Each member of the team is required to work one twilight shift per week to facilitate timely discharge of day case patients.
You will participate in the on call and weekend rota.

Job Description:
An exciting opportunity has emerged to join the Inpatient Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Team at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.
As a Senior Physiotherapist, you will be involved in the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of patients undergoing surgery under a number of specialities, including limb reconstruction, fast-track day surgery, sarcoma, spinal surgery, and complex elective surgery.
You will be required to manage a varied and often complex caseload, as well as supervising junior members of the team, and delivering teachings to other members of staff.
Late working patterns and weekend working will be required on a rota basis.
Principle Duties
- To carry out assessment, management, and treatment as an autonomous practitioner to patients utilising a wide range of treatment skills and options. (This includes enhanced recovery patients as well as those with diverse, complex presentations/multi pathologies).
- To work closely with other members of the physiotherapy team, as well as the wider MDT to facilitate discharge planning alongside patient rehabilitation.
- To delegate work as required to physiotherapy assistants and junior members of staff.
- To supervise a junior member of the physiotherapy team, scheduling and undertaking regular supervisions, and establishing their personal development plan (PDP).
- To undertake the role of a clinical educator for physiotherapy students on clinical placement with the team on a rota basis.
- To participate in and present on relevant topics as part of the in-service training rota.
- To participate in the weekend working rota.
- To participate in the late working rota.
- To deputise for the team leads in their absence.
Responsibilities
- To maintain good working relationships with the multi-disciplinary team, including physiotherapy team colleagues, ward staff and other staff members within the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre and Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
- To ensure effective communication and reporting takes place with other physiotherapists and health professionals both verbally and in writing.
- To be able to motivate and persuade others through effective communication skills, including and not limited to verbal, non-verbal and written methods of communication.
- To maintain accurate, legible, and up to date clinical records.
- To develop and maintain skills required for patient care within the scope of the role in line with individual performance reviews (IPR) and competencies.
- To keep up to date with statutory and mandatory training as required by the trust.
- To undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of Physiotherapy Services.
Health and Safety
- The post holder must be aware of individuals responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act and identify and report, as necessary any untoward incident or accident or potentially hazardous environment.
Infection Control
- Staff members must observe the Trust Policies regarding COVID-19, notably with regards to mask wearing, and the use of additional personal protective equipment (PPE) as directed.
- Staff must wash their hands or use alcohol gel on entry and exit from all clinical areas and/or between each patient contact.
- Staff members have a duty to attend mandatory infection control training provided for them by the Trust.
- Staff members who develop an infection (other than common colds and illness) that may be transmittable to patients have a duty to contact Occupational Health.
Finance
- All staff are accountable for exercising economic and efficient use of the Trust financial and physical resources as well as ensuring the security of Trust property. All staff must also always adhere to statutory guidance within the Trust’s Standing Financial Instructions and Standing Orders.
Human Resources
- To participate in the Trust Performance Review Process.
- The post holder must always carry out theses duties and responsibilities with due regard to the Trust’s Equal Opportunities policy and is expected to promote and implement the Trust’s Equal Opportunities Policy.

Governance
