Job Description
To work within the urology team under the management and leadership of the consultants and the specialist nurses.
To assist in the management of urology and continence patients, delivering holistic, high quality, clinically effective care to patients and families on the wards, clinic and community settings.
To provide information, education and advice within clinical speciality, for patients, families and other professionals
- Work with the multidisciplinary team to provide care a treatment to children with urology and continence concerns.
- To give evidence-based, best-practice urology/continence/enuresis care to children under guidance from senior team members.
- To provide face-to-face and telephone guidance/advice to families.
- To provide specialist urology advice/support for other healthcare professionals (both in hospital and the community).
- To manage a caseload of patients (under guidance from senior team members).
- To support children/families during urology investigations
- To work towards holding nurse-led clinics

Clinical
- In conjunction with senior team members/ consultants, undertake assessment of patients’ needs with urology/continence problems and negotiate appropriate holistic packages of care to effectively meet these needs and the needs of their family.
- Communicate and liaise with multidisciplinary teams in both the hospital and community settings and with other agencies such as education, social services and voluntary agencies to potential child protection issues.
- Communicate effectively and sensitively taking account of the highly complex and sensitive nature of continence problems, issues of non-compliance/ barriers to communication and potential child protection issues.
- Deliver specialist evidence-based care to children with continence problems (including enuresis) under guidance from senior team members
- Undertake treatment/procedures as required dealing with bodily waste products
- Work closely with professionals in primary and secondary care to plan discharge and ensure high standards across the continuum.
- Provide telephone advice to patients and serve as a point of contact for other professionals
- Provide support, advice and counselling for children with continence problems, their parents and families
- Participate in nurse led clinics and nurse led services including bladder scanning/uroflows and 4D scans under the direction of senior team members.
- Undertake continence promotion and comprehensive assessment, where appropriate, for the provision of continence products taking account of health and safety guidelines and relevant trust policies.
- Provide cross cover for clinical care in the absence of other team members
- To offer an individual service and psychological support to children / families / carers respecting their diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
- To be competent in the assessment and management of enuresis and refer children for consultant opinion where appropriate.
- To be familiar with both current clinical protocols and research protocols and relevant investigations and procedures employed in the diagnosis and treatment of enuresis.
- To provide advice and support for all members of the multi-professional team in the care of patients with nocturnal enuresis at any stage of their management. To liaise closely with members of the multi-professional team so that patients with bladder and bowel dysfunction experience a seamless, high quality service.
- To provide guidance, support, advice and counselling to children and their family / carers along the patient pathway. To know when to refer on to other professionals for more specialist guidance, support, advice and counselling.
- To work towards running nurse-led clinics and to participate in essential training to enable this.
Education
- Provide education and advice for patients, their families and other carers such as respite carers and classroom assistants under direction of senior team members.
- Act as a continence resource for ward staff, other professionals and agencies and participate in provision of education updates and training sessions as necessary with support from senior team members.
- Ensure that every opportunity is utilised to promote health education to patients and staff.
- Participate in the development of information and resources for patients, parents and other professionals
- To develop and deliver education programmes in the community in liaison with the multidisciplinary team.
- To act as a preceptor / mentor to nurses undertaking training.
- Develop their knowledge, skills and expertise to a higher academic standard.

Research and Audit
- To assist in the collation and recording of quantitative and qualitative data that provides evidence of productivity, outcomes and quality, through audit and research.
- To participate in clinical audit and research where appropriate as part of promoting excellent care through research.
- To work to promote a culture of evidence based practice.
- To be involved with health promotion
Management
- Be responsible under the direction of senior team members for the clinical management of children with urology and continence problems.
- Manage stocks of continence equipment and supplies, as directed by the lead nurse within established parameters, being aware of resource implications specific to the service.
- Monitor and ensure safe and effective utilisation of resources and equipment taking account of Health and Safety guidelines and trust policy.
- Ensure effective multi-disciplinary and multi-agency communication and liaison channels are established across the hospital and community.
- Maintain accurate records in accordance with Trust procedures, policies and Data Protection Act, making effective use of electronic resources where appropriate
- Contribute to the development of continence documentation and care pathways in conjunction with the multidisciplinary team
- Ensure the views of all patients are effectively sought, channeled and acted upon, including the efficient actioning of complaints in accordance with relevant trust policies.
- Be responsible for the maintenance and accuracy of relevant information systems/databases.
- Contribute to service development and business planning processes
- To work as part of the Continence Team ensuring standards of care are monitored and maintained in accordance with Trust policies, National Guidelines and the Nursing Midwifery Council professional documents.
- Participate in benchmarking, audit, development and implementation of systems for measuring and assessing quality.
- Assist in the compilation of research and evidence based clinical guidelines and protocols relating to clinical area.
- Contribute to service development, audit and research activity to improve quality of care.
- Utilise opportunities to maintain and increase knowledge and expertise within the continence field
- Promote professional practice complying with relevant legislation, NMC Codes and Guidance, Trust and Unit policies.
- Inform team leaders on issues concerning professional practice
- Participate in local, national and international networks with Professional groups and organisations associated with continence in order to improve knowledge, expertise and patient care.
- Undertake Trusts mandatory and continuing education programmes and maintain personal development
