Job overview

The Prenatal Screening Team performs investigations to detect a variety of foetal conditions using results from biochemical markers in maternal serum and other factors. Overall the Prenatal Screening Team provides scientifically determined information which can assist in the best care for mother and foetus during pregnancy. Samples are received from 5 major hospitals in the region, Northern Ireland, and Ireland. Daily duties include pre-analytical technical duties, and significant data entry. You would also be working within the Endocrine Lab, which performs investigations into diabetic care management, gut disorders, tumour markers, and a variety of endocrine abnormalities.

You must be keen to learn and willing to contribute to our rapidly changing laboratory environment. This is a substantive post.


Main duties of the job

Performs a range of routine and non-routine healthcare science activities under supervision, e.g. performs pre-natal screening biochemical tests.

Maintains clinical records in relation to activities carried out.

To work flexibly in reflection of service needs this may include an extended working day and/or participation in delivery of a 24 hour, 7 days per week service.

The work of the service brings staff into constant contact with human body fluids, tissues and hazardous chemicals. This may include blood, pus, urine, faeces, and respiratory secretions.

Maintain and promote professional image of the CUH Trust.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

    GCSE Maths and English (A-C) or equivalent

Desirable criteria

    Appropriate NVQ level 3/diploma

Experience

Essential criteria

    Demonstrable knowledge of a range of routine and non-routine healthcare science duties equivalent to an NVQ level 3/diploma

Desirable criteria

    Practical experience of working in an NHS Biomedical Science laboratory

    Knowledge of Pathology IT systems

    Knowledge of Quality Management Systems

    Previous relevant experience of working in the NHS

    European Computer Driving Licence or equivalent

Knowledge

    Demonstrable knowledge of a range of routine and non-routine healthcare science duties equivalent to an NVQ level 3/diploma

    Willingness to undertake training to extend skill set to deliver role.
