Cardiff University is looking to recruit an experienced, reliable and highly motivated Fitter/Plumber as a member of the Estates & Facilities Mechanical team.

As a member of our team, you will be required to assist with the provision of an efficient business critical response service and routine maintenance for all plumbing and mechanical building services installed throughout the University including heating/ventilation and all equipment associated with mechanical building services.

Plumber/Fitters play a proactive role within an enthusiastic and innovative team, delivering key objectives to meet directorate and university wide requirements. Ensuring all statutory, planned and breakdown works are completed safely, cost effectively and to the agreed KPI’s and Service Level Agreement.

You will be a committed, friendly, team player who is keen to progress and to understand and implement
performance expectations in line with the Cardiff Professional behaviours.

Salary: £26,444 - £29,605 per annum (Grade 4)

Job Description

Main Duties

  • To carry out fault finding and repairs on critical services and routine maintenance for all commercial and domestic plumbing and mechanical building services installed throughout the University including heating/ventilation, natural gas systems and all equipment associated with mechanical building services.
  • To be able to trace faults on the mechanical system and associated equipment, report back all non-mechanical faults to the correct Estates Departments i.e. BeMS technicians and or Electrical Department.
  • To carry out works on steam raising plant, associated controls, pipework, and delivery systems (additional steam training will be provide as necessary).
  • Comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and procedures, including task specific risk assessments and method statements, in the carrying out of maintenance and adaptation work, reporting any potentially unsafe working.
  • Ensure all necessary paperwork required both manually or electronically, are completed accurately and in a timely manner in line with SLA’s. This includes work requests, PPM schedules, stores stock sheets, allocation of hours and any other required for legislation or safety purposes.
  • Ensuring all statutory, planned and breakdown works are completed safely, cost effectively and to the agreed KPI’s and Service Level Agreement.
  • On behalf of the University to act as a competent person for all works defined in and associated with Safe Systems of Work.
  • To carry out mechanical isolations and de isolations to reinstate mechanical supplies as required under the Universities mechanical services policy.
  • Establish working relationships with key contacts to help improve service levels, developing appropriate communication links with the University’s Schools/Departments and outside bodies as required.
  • Manage critical and essential material vehicle stock levels and follow the universities procurement process in place orders with preferred suppliers to establish best value.
  • Maintain personal tools, equipment, and vehicles, taking responsibility for the safe keeping of these. Complete regular checks on vehicles to ensure it is in good condition.
  • To attend, as identified and by agreement, development, and training courses to keep abreast of new industry best practice and statutory regulations.
  • To carry out such duties as are required and are commensurate with the level of this post.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

1. Hold a recognised apprenticeship in City and Guilds/NVQ level 3 or equivalent in plumbing or a mechanical discipline / HVAC
2. Demonstrate experience of working within a reactive maintenance environment with substantial, relevant post apprentice experience.
3. Good understanding of job specific General Health and Safety in the workplace including risk assessments and method statement.
4. Ability to work well as part of a team and independently to achieve overall team goals and the ability to prioritise tasks.
5. Ability to solve problems and make decisions using initiative to investigate and diagnose problems and to escalate as required at the appropriate level.
6. Good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate appropriately with customers and other departments.
7. A valid driving license is necessary as it is a condition of employment that all personnel are able to utilise the fleet of University vehicles to reach all University sites.

Desirable Criteria

8. Hold an up-to-date Gas Safe qualification (training will be funded for this as necessary).
9. Fluency in Welsh, written and oral.

Additional Information

Additional Information:
This is a full-time open-ended position of 35 hours per week. Hours of work normally be 0800 to 1600, with one hour for lunch.
  • Overtime is a condition of employment and will be worked as and when reasonably requested. No regular level of overtime work is guaranteed.
  • The Estates & Campus Facilities department operates a formal stand-by and call-out rota, where you will be required to participate in this scheme as part of your duties. On call team members will, as reasonably required by management will be expected to cover periods of absence of their on-call team colleagues. Payment is made when on these duties.
  • To undertake any other duties as from time to time may be required commensurate with the grade of the post.
  • To attend training courses as required to maintain the ability to carry out the role.
  • To be available to attend annual Health Surveillance assessments
