Description of Job

About the Work Unit

The mission of the Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control is to safeguard those that live, work, learn, and play in Colorado by reducing threats to lives, property and the environment. The Division safeguards the public through: fire prevention and code enforcement; wildfire preparedness, response, suppression, coordination, and management; training and certification; public information and education; and technical assistance to local governments.

This work unit will be split into two primary purposes Professional Development (Education) and Community Risk Reduction (CRR):

The primary purpose of the Education unit is:

Augment the generic training and third-party certifications currently used to certify local governmental entities’ inspection and plans examiner professionals and private third-party inspection professionals with state supported training and education, relevant to the inspection of and plan review for facilities overseen by the Division;

Perform random inspections (validation surveys) of facilities and construction projects subsequent to inspections performed by state certified governmental entities’ inspection professionals and private third-party inspection professionals. A certain percentage of local inspections are chosen for validation. The intent is to compare the deficiencies identified during inspections by both the local and state inspectors in order to identify discrepancies. These discrepancies are relayed to the local inspection agency for remedial action;

Perform frequent coordinated inspections with local governmental entities’ inspection professionals and private third-party inspection professionals. This is especially important with new inspectors in smaller jurisdictions, where the inspections will serve as a mentorship opportunity;

Perform random peer-review of construction documents submitted to local governmental entities’ plans examiner professionals for permitting. The process is very similar to the validation survey process noted above. Included in these peer reviews will be mentoring and training opportunities, which has previously been unavailable to many of these jurisdictions;

Respond to and investigate complaints, primarily for the Suppression program.

The primary purpose of the CRR unit is:

Collect, analyze, and understand individual communities’ unique risks, capabilities, and characteristics.

Collaborate with stakeholders within those communities to develop a plan to reduce risks that are viewed as high priority.

Advocate for fire prevention within fire departments and their municipalities through education and training.

About the Job

This position provides administrative and programmatic support to the CRR & Education Branch within the Fire and Life Safety Section of the Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC).

The position provides internal and external customer support, will update and maintain the Fire Safe Colorado Website, utilize social media platforms to communicate events and public education pertaining to the Branch, process and disseminate applications and funds for the Home-Hardening Grant Program and assist with photo/video editing as needed.

Duties includes providing general administrative assistance and support for the Branch Chief, providing logistical support and preparation for meetings and events, communicating with other Branches, Units, and external stakeholders on behalf of the Branch Chief, and synthesizing and disseminating pertinent information to staff.

Colorado standards, statutes, rules, policies, and procedures for Colorado Health Facilities and Colorado Public School Facilities.
Requirements, rules, policies, and procedures for the Fire Inspector Certifications Program and the current ICC or NFPA certification requirements.
