Job Description

Job Purpose
The postholder will join the School of Infection and Immunity, MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR) (http://www.cvr.ac.uk/) and will contribute to a core-funded research programme at the CVR focused on Virus Cross Species Transmission, working with Professor Daniel Streicker and Professor Pablo Murcia. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as help manage and direct this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Perform the following activities in conjunction with and under the guidance of the Principal Investigators (PIs), Professors Daniel Streicker and Pablo Murcia.
1. Plan and conduct assigned research individually or jointly in accordance with the project deliverables and the research strategy of the MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR).
2. Perform serological assays (ELISA and neutralisation assays) on sera derived from humans and animals (including both wildlife and domestic animals).
3. Implement a PhIP pipeline for detection of antibodies against focal viral families in serum samples of humans and animals as described above.
4. Maintain a biorepository of serum samples and associated metadata.
5. Contribute to the coordination of laboratory work by members of the Streicker and Murcia groups (e.g. managing shipments and authorizations, procurement of consumables and equipment, liaising with internal administrators and safety officers.)
6. Collaborate with colleagues and participate in team/group/meetings/seminars/workshops across the CVR and wider community.
7. Contribute to the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.
8. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including Budgets/Expenditure.
9. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline.
10. Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.
11. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Director of the CVR and/or Principal Investigators.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Qualifications
Essential
A1 Ability to demonstrate the competencies required to undertake the duties associated with this level of post having acquired the necessary knowledge and skills in a similar role.
Or
Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 8 (Scottish Vocational Qualification level 4, Higher National Diploma) or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.
Desirable
B1 Honours degree or equivalent in a biological science or other relevant subject.
Knowledge and Skills
Essential
C1 Excellent laboratory skills e.g. performing laboratory protocols consistently. C2 Excellent organisational skills to manage a large repository of clinical specimens and associated data.
C3. Knowledge in techniques involving complex serological assays such as neutralisation assays using virus pseudotypes. C4 Ability to learn laboratory techniques and implement them with medium to high throughput.
C5 Appropriate workload/time/project/budget/people management skills. C6 IT and data analysis/interpretation skills as appropriate.
C7 Highly motivated, able to use initiative and quick to learn new techniques. C8 Creative, flexible and pragmatic approach to solving research problems.
C9 Experience preparing data for publication and writing publications.
Experience
Essential
E1 Extensive experience in cell culture.
E2 Experience of handling clinical specimens typical of a diagnostic laboratory, for example serum, swab material, RNA, etc).
E3 Experience of working in a virology laboratory or diagnostic work.
E4 Experience with the collection and analysis of data.
E5 Experience of scientific writing. E6 Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner.

Terms and Conditions
Salary will be Grade 6, £32,332 - £36,024 per annum.
This post is full-time (35 hrs per week) and fixed-term with funding end date of 31st March 2026.
