Job Description

Tenure faculty (regardless of rank) - persons with the titles of professor, associate professor, assistant professor and instructor who serve on appointments totaling 50% or more service to the university and who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. Duties and responsibilities are assigned in accordance with the workload guidelines laid out in the pattern of administration of each faculty member’s tenure initiation unit (TIU) and, as appropriate, regional campus; obligations will include research, service and/or teaching or clinical practice. These faculty will have earned doctorate or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study or possession of equivalent experience.

The Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business invites applications for multiple open rank tenure-track faculty positions with research and teaching interests on the general topic of racial disparities in business-related areas including economic opportunity, access to capital, employment, career advancement, and entrepreneurship. The holders of these positions will join a scholarly community – the newly created Fisher DEI Business Research Initiative – that spans all academic units within the college and that has an ultimate aim of reducing opportunity gaps for members of under-represented groups and minority-owned business enterprises. Applicants must hold a doctorate in a relevant business field. New hires as part of this initiative will hold tenure track positions in their respective disciplinary departments (e.g., Accounting & Management Information Systems, Finance, Operations & Business Analytics, Management & Human Resources, Marketing & Logistics) and participate in the college-wide community addressing race-based opportunity gaps. That community will have access to and/or support from several entities within and external to the university, including:

  • The Fisher College Office of Diversity and Inclusion, a unit that supports the Fisher College’s effort to achieve diversity goals.
  • The Office of Executive Education within the Fisher College, which delivers degree and non-degree programming that is designed around the interests of advanced business professionals (e.g., senior leadership development, operational excellence, DEI, IT business strategy, Lean Six Sigma, & FinTech).
  • The Minority Supplier Development Council, a privately funded non-profit that advocates to policy makers and facilitates connections between the purchasing and procurement arms of large organizations and minority-owned business enterprises.
  • ASCEND Columbus, a program that works with local minority business owners’ to improve their management capabilities with respect to skill sets ranging from continuous improvement and project management to negotiations and finance.
  • The Tenure Project, a collaboration involving top-tier colleges of business that has as its primary goal “to increase the chances that under-represented junior faculty receive tenure at research universities.”

Members of the Fisher DEI Business Research Initiative are also part of the university-wide RAISE initiative community. Through the Race, Inclusion and Social Equity (RAISE) initiative, Ohio State is enhancing our world-class research program on race, inclusion, and social equity. Over the next decade, the university will add at least 50 tenure-track faculty members to existing scholars whose research can help to narrow social disparities in educational attainment, health outcomes, rates of incarceration, political representation, environmental impacts, and economic well-being. Adding scholars in focused areas will enhance the university’s outstanding faculty and inform solutions to intractable issues. RAISE is part of Ohio State’s larger initiative to expand the size and impact of Ohio State’s faculty over the coming decade, while also enhancing academic and personal resources to support Ohio State scholars, educators, and practitioners through all phases of their careers.

The Fisher College of Business’ stated mission is “to create and disseminate ideas, encourage scholarly thinking, and develop principled leaders who serve with impact around the world.” In fulfilling that mission, the faculty and staff of the college have built a highly ranked undergraduate program (#7 among public colleges of business in the U.S.), full-time MBA program (#6 among publics), and MBA program for working professionals (#7 among publics and #11 overall). In terms of research production, Fisher ranks #11 among public colleges of business. Essential to the continuation of that success and the full realization of Fisher’s mission is the diversity of the college’s faculty, staff, and students, and its commitment to research and teaching that serves marginalized, disenfranchised and under-studied populations.

Earlier career applicants may be considered for the Provost’s Tenure-Track Fellow to Faculty Program. Fellowships will be two years, after which fellows will transfer to the rank of assistant professor. During the fellowship, fellows will receive research funding and participate in career development programs offered by the Office of Academic Affairs to support their transition to assistant professor and their long-term career success. In addition, fellows will participate in the activities of their academic unit and have a designated faculty mentor. The fellows will comprise a cohort of early-career scholars and are expected to (1) establish residence and participate in the academic life of the university, (2) focus time on research with limited teaching or co-teaching (teaching up to a maximum of one class per academic year as an option at the scholar’s discretion), (3) meet regularly with their faculty colleagues and mentor(s), and (4) participate in professional development programs.

Applicants should submit; a cover letter summarizing their qualifications, an academic resume, a research statement, and writing samples. Shortly after uploading these materials, applicants will receive a link and instructions for submitting three letters of recommendation. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until the positions are filled, but to ensure full consideration, applicants should submit materials as soon as possible, ideally by January 5, 2023.

Questions regarding the application process can be directed to Fisher College of Business Faculty Affairs at fcob-faculty_affairs@osu.edu.

The Ohio State University is committed to enhancing academic excellence. Recruiting, supporting, and retaining faculty of the highest caliber is a core component of this initiative. In support of this, the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA) has created the Office of Dual Careers and Faculty Relocation (DCFR) to focus on supporting new and prospective faculty. This support includes dual career services, consultation and resources related to relocation, as well as assistance identifying opportunities to engage on campus and the surrounding community. While employment opportunities are not guaranteed, resources and consultation are provided to support the partners of new and prospective faculty as they are considering or transitioning to The Ohio State University. Looking forward to continuing engaging with you and supporting your collective efforts to recruit and support talented individuals at OSU who will advance the scholarship on race, inclusion, and social equity.
