The Job
Due to ongoing expansion and development, we are seeking a highly motivated Laboratory Technician with considerable molecular microbiology biology and immunology experience. The successful candidate will join an established commercial microbiome testing laboratory, located in St. Philips, Bristol. They will also be responsible for the processing of commercial human samples for microbiome analysis and health-marker testing utilising multiple protein and molecular-based assays. We are looking for a collaborative, innovative and adaptable candidate who has a passion for improving human health and a drive for seeing complex projects through to completion.
This role is full-time and permanent, based onsite, working Monday-Friday 8.00am - 4.30pm onsite.
Key responsibilities
Responsible for the day-to-day laboratory organisation and processing of commercial patient samples for human microbiome testing. This includes performing experimental analysis of biological material using a variety of standard techniques, handling of containment level 2 human biological samples and assisting with general laboratory practices and routine maintenance.
- Receive completed patient samples into the laboratory, recording key information such as sample type and ID and escalate any non-compliance appropriately.
- Perform routine laboratory testing (such as ELISA or qPCR) of commercial patient samples, in accordance with SOPs.
- Understand and operate in accordance with standard CL2 and Clean Room laboratory practices, safety procedures and processes at all times.
- Produce accurate and reproducible data and assist with results analysis of commercial patient samples, in accordance with SOPs.
- Work efficiently and safely, as assigned in the lab weekly schedule, to ensure timely processing of commercial samples and delivery of laboratory objective-key results.
- Maintain a tidy and safe working environment whilst carrying out duties.
- Assist with the generation of reports and data handling within LIMS.
- Perform and appropriately document routine standardised quality control checks.
- Assist with the preparation of SOPs, lab protocols, Health and Safety documentation.
- Carry out routine laboratory and equipment maintenance, such as deep cleaning, receiving deliveries, waste management and wipe tests, as per set schedules, to maintain a safe and efficient working environment.
- Ensure traceability of all activities by maintaining accurate and complete laboratory logs and records.
- Appropriately and promptly escalate all occasions of non-compliance/incidents or concerns to senior staff for review and resolution.
- Ensure that stock levels of laboratory supplies are maintained by highlighting low stock to senior staff in a timely fashion.
- Any ad hoc duties as requested.

Education and Experience
- HNC/HND or BSc/MSc in relevant science subject or equivalent relevant qualification.
- Demonstrable work experience in a relevant technical laboratory role.
- Have a working knowledge of DNA/RNA isolation, protein extraction, PCR/qPCR, ELISA.
- Working knowledge of health and safety procedures and waste management.
- Experience in using Microsoft Office.
