Job Description

Are you a Registered (Adult) General Nurse who strives to make a positive difference to the lives of your patients? Do you have the passion, drive and ability to deliver high quality care?

If the answer is yes to these questions, We are looking for registered nurses to join our dedicated and highly profession team within Gastroenterology at University Hospitals Leicester.

Our team is made up of more than 17,000 staff providing a range of services primarily for the one million residents of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Ward 42 and Ward 43 at the Leicester Royal Infirmary site are 28 bedded wards providing high quality care to patients with Gastroenterology needs. We have Nutritional specialists including the Leicestershire Intestinal failure team (LIFTT), Hepatology and Luminal medical teams.

Responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of evidence-based nursing care for a group of patients.
Assist in and contribute to the management and organisation of a ward/clinical area.
Actively contribute to setting and maintaining high standards of quality nursing care.
Work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families.
Act as a clinical and professional role model, mentoring, assessing and supporting students and learners on placement within the clinical area.

KEY RESULT AREAS
Delivery of effective health care within the organisation
Perform comprehensive assessments of patients’ nursing needs and plan, implement and evaluate care delivery according to changing healthcare needs.
Take responsibility for the care needs of individuals and groups of patients.
Collect, collate and fully accurately report patient information, maintaining accurate, complete and contemporaneous nursing records.
Involve patients and carers/relatives in the planning and delivery of care.
Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure needs are met in relation to care input, support for ongoing care needs and safe discharge.

Establish and maintain effective communication with patients and carers/relatives.
Recognise, prioritise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations.

Establishing effective leadership and communication
Co-ordinate, organise and prioritise the work of the nursing team on a day-to-day basis.
Supervise others and participate in their education and development. Where appropriate, act as a mentor/expert witness.
Contribute to the development of services, new ways of working and the implementation of change.
Act as a professional and clinical role model to all staff, patients, carers and the public at all times.
Maintain effective and efficient communication with the Ward/Unit Manager and members of the multi-disciplinary team on issues related to patient care and organisation of nursing teams.
Act in a professional manner and ensure self and ward staff adhere to the UHL Uniform policy at all times.
Deputise as appropriate for the Ward/Unit Manager or Deputy Ward/Unit Manager.
Continuing education, professional and personal development
Undertake the Trust Corporate and CMG specific induction and competency Programmes.
Ensure own compliance and compliance of others with regard to mandatory training and NMC Professional re-registration requirements. Raise any issues with regard to attending or accessing training.
Responsible for maintaining up-to-date skills, knowledge and competence and awareness of professional issues.
Undertake specialist education and training as required that will allow healthcare to be delivered to the user through new ways of working.
Actively promote and participate in Clinical Supervision/Mentorship or equivalent support mechanisms.
Act as a preceptor to newly registered staff and on a regular basis act as a mentor and assessor for students learners on clinical placements.
Take a lead responsibility for a specific function or area of knowledge/clinical skills within the team e.g. speciality focused link nurse, health promotion lead, student link nurse.
Accept designated responsibilities from other team members and actively contribute to performance review and the appraisal and personal development planning (PDP) process within the Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF).
Clinical governance, reduction of risk, audit and research
Ensure that the delivery of care to own patients and for all patients when in charge meet the standards determined by the Ward/Unit Manager and the Standards for Better Health.

Adhere to Trust policies, procedures and clinical guidelines and ensure compliance of others.

Promote and practice the highest standards of prevention and control of infection at all times.
Continually monitor standards of nursing care and contribute to improvement of care through benchmarking, audit and research.
Participate in and contribute to patient and public involvement activities.
Promote patient dignity, equality, diversity and rights.
Ensure own and all nursing practice is, at all times, in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct and raise any concerns with the Ward/Unit Manager.
Management and use of resources and information
Responsible for the effective and efficient use of clinical, physical and financial resources.
Use health-related information only for the purposes for which it is intended and in accordance with the Data Protection Act.
Ensure confidentiality is maintained at all times and information relating to patient/users and personnel is used only in connection with authorised duties.
Maintaining a safe environment and quality
Take responsibility for maintaining own and others’ health, safety and security.
Ensure own actions assist with maintaining best practice and Standards for Better Health.
Carry out duties in accordance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1971.
Move and handle patients and goods in ways that promote the health of the patient and care team and that are consistent with legislation.
Responsible for the maintenance of a clean and safe environment adhering to infection control policies procedures and best practice.
Assist and maintain safe and hazard-free area of work.
