Job Description
Lloyds Banking Group is a leading UK based financial services group providing a wide range of banking and financial services, focused on personal and commercial customers. We have a footprint that touches nearly every community and household in the UK, with more than 26 million customers.
Be it home ownership, providing finance to SMEs or supporting the transition to net zero, most of our services are influenced by political and public policy developments that are constantly evolving. It's our Group Public Affairs (GPA) team that plays the central role in working with policy-makers to explain our point of view and to achieve a more conducive business environment - one in which we can strive to be the best financial services provider for our customers and help Britain prosper.
Could you help us make this possible?
In joining our team, you'll contribute to our work with parliament, government, metro mayors, civil servants, regulators, trade associations, think tanks and other external partners. You'll work collaboratively with teams across our Group to generate ideas for policy change and political engagement on topics of importance to our customers, clients, and the business more generally. You'll be speaking directly to our audiences on these issues to raise awareness and influence policy, as well as harnessing the expertise of our specialists across the bank to help address detailed questions and devise effective policy advocacy campaigns.
The GPA team seeks to be agile and a manager will be expected to fulfil a variety of duties and tasks which include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Identify, develop and advocate for the Group’s positioning on UK policy and all actions relating to political engagement. This will involve close collaboration with the GPA senior management team.
  • Represent the Group, its policy propositions and political engagement initiatives at various external functions and meetings including with government, trade bodies and other opinion formers.
  • Write informative and concise political briefings for use by the Group Executive Committee, Board members and other senior leaders to facilitate effective political stakeholder management across the Group.
  • Carry out monitoring of appropriate political issues arising from the main UK institutions which may affect the Group and its customers.
  • Take a leading role in coordinating events with politicians and other corporate partners, ensuring both internal and external participants are appropriately briefed.
  • Manage Group announcements with political audiences, deploying the Group’s narrative so that the GPA audience has a clear understanding of LBG’s purpose and approach
  • Work with the business divisions to develop ideas for activity that can be showcased to politicians that helps them understand how the bank supports its customers and helps Britain to prosper
  • Work with the relevant business teams to interrogate and respond to enquiries from Members of Parliament, ensuring they are handled with appropriate sensitivity and diligence.
  • Provide input and coordinate responses to specific consultations that may affect the Group or our customers.
What skills, capabilities and experience will you need to bring to the role?
  • Recent working experience of Westminster politics, the civil service or policy / political engagement for policy think tanks, local government or a financial services company.
  • An ability to communicate confidently with high profile politicians and civil servants and, ideally, an existing political network.
  • Energy and passion to develop policy that addresses problems government is grappling with and enhances the reputation and the interests of Lloyds Banking Group.
  • An ability to identify political engagement opportunities across the Group’s internal and external stakeholder network.
  • Ability to deliver counsel to senior leaders, both within and beyond the Group, in a manner which is compelling and authoritative.
  • Ability to analyse and interrogate quantitative and qualitative data sets, assessing trends and insight to aid formulation of new policies.
  • Ability to think strategically and assess long-term implications of policy proposals.
  • A natural curiosity about politics, public policy and the UK’s socio-economic challenges.
  • A willingness to work flexibly in a fast-paced environment in order to meet urgent demands from both internal and external partners.
We have a flexible working arrangement and expect colleagues to come into the office at least two times a week to enable team collaboration. This role also requires frequent visits to, and face to face engagement with politicians and civil servants in Westminster and Whitehall. As such, applicants should be in close proximity to London and able to travel easily around the UK.
What will you get in return?
We're committed to building a workforce which reflects the diversity of the customers and communities we serve, and to building an inclusive environment where all our colleagues can be themselves and succeed on merit.
You’d also get a benefits package that includes:
  • A performance related bonus
  • Generous pension contribution
  • 30 Days leave plus bank holidays
  • A flexible cash pot (4% of base salary) to spend on benefits
  • Private health cover
  • Wider corporate benefits and perks
We're dedicated to providing you with opportunities and support to develop you and to optimise your potential!
So, if you have the skills we’re seeking then get in touch, we’d love to hear from you!
At Lloyds Banking Group, we're driven by a clear purpose; to help Britain prosper. Across the Group, our colleagues are focused on making a difference to customers, businesses and communities. With us you'll have a key role to play in shaping the financial services of the future, whilst the scale and reach of our Group means you'll have many opportunities to learn, grow and develop.
We keep your data safe. So, we'll only ever ask you to provide confidential or sensitive information once you have formally been invited along to an interview or accepted a verbal offer to join us which is when we run our background checks. We'll always explain what we need and why, with any request coming from a trusted Lloyds Banking Group person.
We're focused on creating a values-led culture and are committed to building a workforce which reflects the diversity of the customers and communities we serve. Together we’re building a truly inclusive workplace where all of our colleagues have the opportunity to make a real difference.
