Job Description

The opportunity

We are looking for a marketing assistant to support our busy, award-winning team, and work across the whole of the Penguin Press list.

As part of the marketing team you will sit at the heart of the publishing process, working with all other departments across the company. This is a brilliant first step into marketing, and the publishing industry. You’ll join a dynamic, collaborative and friendly team, supporting the marketing director and head of campaigns, assisting in the planning and execution of campaigns, and the varied day-to-day running of a busy department. There will be opportunities as the role develops to both support on and manage marketing campaigns of your own.

You don’t need publishing or marketing experience – we are looking for someone enthusiastic, curious and passionate about connecting readers with new ideas, and great writing.

About Penguin Press

Penguin Press is one of the most forward-thinking and celebrated publishing houses in the industry, comprising our flagship imprints Allen Lane, Penguin Classics, Pelican and Particular Books. We publish a wide range of non-fiction books across history, science and politics, from bestselling authors such as Carlo Rovelli, Michael Lewis, Katja Hoyer and Naomi Klein, through to debuts like Shon Faye, Yomi Sode and Florian Gadsby. We are also home to Penguin Classics, a constantly evolving list, and home to landmark classic brands and series: from the Little Clothbound Classics to Penguin Modern Classics.

The role

  • Assist the Marketing Director and Head of Campaigns with day-to-day tasks on campaigns as well as general team processes
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the marketing team
  • Support on campaign activity, including creation of creative assets: from engaging online content to point-of-sale
  • Build relationships with key contacts in all other departments across the company (including sales, publicity, production and editorial)
  • Build up the marketing campaign knowledge and experience to manage your own campaigns
  • Deal with administrative responsibilities to help with the smooth running of the wider marketing team, including coordination of internal and external meetings, and working closely with the Marketing Director on diary admin and key internal publishing meetings
  • Assist with the preparation of presentations, our bi-annual catalogue, trade highlights, conferences and sales meetings
  • Process invoices and keep budget sheets up-to-date

What you’ll bring

  • A passion for books
  • Strong interpersonal and teamworking skills
  • Ability to prioritise competing demands and excellent organisation
  • Time management skills, with the ability to work under pressure and to tight deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Interest in pursuing new marketing opportunities and new ways of reaching readers, staying abreast of wider book trends
  • Experience in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint)

How to apply

Please apply with your CV and Cover Letter by 23:59 on Thursday 11th May. As part of your application, we’d like you to respond to the following question as part of your Cover Letter (no more than 200 words):

  • Tell us about something you’ve read/watched/heard recently that you would recommend and why. (This can be a book, article, film, song, game or anything else you think of interest)

Our hybrid working approach

PRH is currently experimenting with hybrid working and involving colleagues across the business to shape our future ways of working. The needs of our teams and individuals are different, so we’re not taking a one-size-fits-all approach.

This role is based in London and we'll expect you to work three days a week from our Pimlico office. The exact balance of office to remote working will depend on the nature of your role and team needs, and we are open to discussing this through the recruitment process.

What you can expect from us:

Salary: You‘ll start on £26,500. Expect a £1,000 increase on your first anniversary in this role to reflect your growing contribution.

Our employees are the heart of our business. We have a range of benefits to reflect our commitment to our employees, some of which are:

  • 27 days paid holiday entitlement in year one (plus bank holidays), increasing a day each year up to 30 days
  • Medical cover
  • Life assurance
  • Cycle to Work scheme
  • Discounted gym membership
  • Generous pension scheme
  • Summer working hours (role dependent)
  • Volunteering policy and charity matching
  • Employee Assistance programme
  • Mentoring programme
  • Extended gender neutral parental leave
  • Access to books and eBooks across Penguin Random House UK
  • Each site has trained mental health first aiders
  • We plant a tree for every new employee to our business

Our creativity is inspired by different perspectives, so we want our culture to be one of belonging, where everyone feels welcome and where differences are celebrated.

As a Disability Confident Committed organisation, we're part of the offer an interview scheme. This is where disabled applicants who meet the essential criteria for the role can opt in to get to the next recruitment stage. There may be some situations where volume of applicants means we can't take all eligible candidates to interview.

We want to make sure disabled applicants can be their best at each step of the recruitment journey. If you need adjustments during the application process, we encourage you to get in touch with us at http://PRHCareersUK@penguinrandomhouse.co.uk. Remember, you only need to share what you are comfortable to for us to support your adjustment request.
