Hybrid Working

The Home Office hybrid working model means that staff will need to attend their workplace a minimum of 40% of their contracted hours, averaged over an agreed period which suits business needs. While 40% workplace attendance is a minimum requirement across the organisation, business areas may operate anywhere within the sliding scale of 40% - 100% workplace attendance.

Job description

We are recruiting:

  • Software Developer Apprenticeship Level 4
  • DevOps Engineer Apprenticeship Level 4

Responsibilities

You will be a hard-working and enthusiastic individual with a flexible and collaborative approach to work. You will be someone who can work well as part of a busy team but are equally comfortable working independently or with limited supervision. In these roles, you will be making a positive contribution to the overall success of your business area.

Software Developer Apprenticeship

As an apprentice Software Developer, you will be paired with engineering colleagues to learn on the job whilst designing, running and improving software components.

You can expect to benefit from training, coaching and mentoring to help you develop in this role. You will be learning to work to our technical standards writing clean and secure code.

Alongside this you will be mentored to help develop a rounded set of skills and supporting knowledge:

  • Working in a test-driven manner; testing, correcting and documenting simple programs or scripts.
  • Building your knowledge of different systems and software implementation.
  • Providing crucial service support to users with difficulties or issues.

The initial training course will provide you with the learning and tools you need to contribute more effectively to the workplace.

When on the job, you will be building your experience, working with colleagues designing and building products for citizens and Home Office employees, for example, in helping people apply for a visa.

Who you’ll work with:

  • Engineering colleagues who will oversee your work and coach and mentor you.
  • Infrastructure Engineers, Technical Architects and Security Architects (DDaT colleagues and/or 3rd party suppliers) to design, build and deliver software solutions.
  • The wider software engineering community, to understand your place in the organisation and begin mapping out your future development.

Those successful at obtaining a Software Developer Apprenticeship will be required to complete ‘up to’ three-months virtual training programme with the apprenticeship provider at the start of the apprenticeship.

DevOps Engineer Apprenticeship

An Apprentice DevOps Engineer works towards being able to support our platforms and help build embedded DevOps skills in teams.

Your role is to help resolve tickets relating to the maintenance of the platforms, often needing to make updates with support to resolve the reported issues.

You will work under the guidance of your technical peers, developing your understanding of our platforms, pipelines, and automation approaches.

As an apprentice, you will also be expected to follow structured learning with provided tools, to develop your skills and experience against the apprenticeship standard.

You will be assessed against this standard as part of this role, with the expectation that you will gain a Level 4 apprenticeship in DevOps to support your career progression.

The initial training will provide you with the learning and tools you need to contribute more effectively before you start in the workplace for ‘on the job’ training.

You will build your experience, working with colleagues supporting and enhancing products for Home Office employees.

At the end of the apprenticeship, you will participate in and be expected to pass an assessment to gain a Level 4 qualification in DevOps and will, therefore, be able to apply for future posts as an Associate DevOps Engineer.

As an Apprentice DevOps Engineer, you will be paired with engineering colleagues to learn on the job. You can expect to benefit from training, coaching, and mentoring to help you develop in this role.

Your main day to day responsibilities will be:

  • Providing basic helpdesk support to resolve platform operational issues and support system and service up-time.
  • Writing simple automation components (scripts) for our platforms.
  • Helping execute test and deployment activities with teams.
  • Signposting users to appropriate people and technical resources.
  • Learning more advanced automatin and cloud skills to advance as an engineer.

All our engineers are expected to embody an open and positive approach, supporting the Home Office in:

  • Progressing the DDaT Profession and helping to build our community.
  • Working and assessing to appropriate standards for instance, accessibility, the GDS service standard and our own community practices.
  • Improving our skills and approaches as well as keeping up to speed with the technology landscape.

Those successful at obtaining a DevOps Engineer Apprenticeship will be required to complete ‘up to’ three-month virtual training programme with the apprenticeship provider at the start of the apprenticeship.

Essential Criteria

  • Critical thinking and the ability to investigate, evaluate information and reach conclusions.
  • The ability to work independently and to take responsibility, be proactive and take the initiative, demonstrate perseverance and aim to see things through.
  • Be digitally competent.
  • Confident working on computers and be able to use programmes such as Microsoft Office suite - Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel.

Desirable Criteria

Ideally you will have:

  • Level 3 Qualification
  • A Level in Maths or IT

To be eligible for the apprenticeship:

You should be committed to spend 20% of your working time on learning activity

The expectation is that apprentices are employed for a minimum of 30 hours per. week.

Need to ensure you meet Government requirement to complete an apprenticeship:

  • You must work at least 50% of the time in England.
  • Valid passport/birth certificate and NI number.
  • Not undertaking another apprenticeship or government funded qualification at the same time.

These roles are ideal for candidates who have ‘not studied to degree level and are looking to develop their knowledge and skills whilst in employment’.

Should have GCSE grade ‘C’ or above in Maths and English, or the equivalent, such as key skills or functional skills. If you do not or are unable to provide evidence of this (e.g., certificate), then you will be required to complete Level 2 functional skills during the apprenticeship programme with support.

You must not hold a qualification at or above Level 4 in a similar subject. You can hold a qualification in a related subject area at a lower level, e.g., Level 3 (or A-Level equivalent). You may also be ineligible if you have substantial experience in the role for which you are applying, as an apprenticeship must provide you with a significantly new skill set / skills uplift.

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles (opens in a new window), and will assess your Behaviours, Strengths and Experience.

As part of the application process, you will first be asked to confirm your eligibility by providing some basic personal information.

After submission of this first stage, you will be invited to complete a Civil Service Verbal and Numerical Tests.

If you successfully pass these tests, you will then be invited to complete the full application form.

If you are successful at sift stage, you will be invited to an interview which will be a blended approach of strength-based questions and behaviour-based questions.

Candidates will also be required to complete a mandatory aptitude test, prior to interview.

Other apprenticeships, requiring the same skills and experience, could be offered without a new competition.

Sift will take place week commencing 22nd May 2023

Interviews will take place week commencing 19th June 2023

We will try to meet the dates set out in the advert, however on occasions these dates may change.

Interviews will be carried out via video. Candidates will be required to have access to:

PLEASE NOTE: Due to time constraints we may not be able to offer alternative interview date(s). It is therefore expected that candidates who are successful at sift stage will make themselves available during the above time frame given.

A reserve list of successful candidates will be kept for 12 months. Should another role become available within that period you may be offered this position. We may use a location Merit order.
