This is a field based role and can be based anywhere in the UK.
Why this job matters
You will be a BT-wide technical & compliance authority for Fire, Flood & Gas systems in BT. This covers all of BT’s technical facilities (c. 6000 exchanges, c.30 data-centres, 22 Molbile Core Switch sites) across the UK, with c. 250K mechanical and electrical assets under management.
These facilities and associated infrastructure drives all BT network-based services, as well as internal and external IT solutions, and underpins BT’s strategy in terms of accelerated fibre rollout, ESN/5G deployment and much more.

You will excel as a technical specialist, involved in major projects and compliance programmes covering FFGD installations in association with M&E across the BT estate. You will play a key role in the expansion of BT’s 21C Core network

What you’ll be doing
  • You will be a Fixed Networks specialist for Fire, Flood, Gas Detection (FFGD) Infrastructure.
  • Performing due diligence, thorough analysis, definition, development and continuous improvement of effective and detailed policies, to ensure compliance with statutory laws, regulations and agreements across the BT operational estate in the UK and Globally.
  • Ensure policy documentation up to date to meet latest regulatory and statutory obligations and provide technical leadership over the procurement of the FFGD environmental infrastructure equipment.
  • Evaluting and analysing advance technologies with the perspective of adding significant benefit and value to the BT operation.
  • Constantly monitor and evaluate the infrastructure already in service, with regard to routine and reactive maintenance, processes and practices, to proactively advise the power governance board senior directors
  • To Provide technical and financial advice on what risks are present and how such risks can be best mitigated without compromise to HSE and regulatory codes of practice
  • Be responsible for Supply management and support supplier selection to ensure that BT benefits from the most cost effective commercial terms available.
  • Delivery of major capital investment to ensure that programs are delivered on time and within the agreed authorized budget, with prioritisation of budget to ensure most effective spend. To set and adjust E2E processes for the delivery into service, in life operation and maintenance, and end of life decommissioning of FFGD equipment. Witnessing and acceptance testing of new models of FFGD units, to ensure they meet BT’s requirements.
  • Provide technical support for Power Field Operations units on maintenance policy, safety and legislation relating to FFGD systems.
  • Reviewing and authoring TSO Field engineering training courses provided for both Planning and maintenances teams. Provide dashboard RAG reporting on key compliance metrics to Power Governance Board.
  • This role will set policy and undertake independent assurance during commissioning & de-commissioning of legacy & new FFGD systems, and assuring compliance across a team of c.1500 engineers – mentoring, coaching and supporting the engineering teams.
  • Alignment of policies across differing network locations (BT / Global & Core Mobile estates).
Required Experience
  • Specialist in alarms and/or FFGD systems and processes.
  • Knowledge of current H&S requirements and legislations irrespective of firing industry or in relations to fire detection and prevention industry.

Nice to have:
  • Working knowledge of The Electricity at Work Act, The Health and Safety at Work At & Construction Design Management Regulations.
  • Demonstrable practical experience of: on-site power generation, UPS Systems, AC Switch-gear, HV Power, Fuel tanks, modular cooling, centralised cooling, airflow, BMS, iron work.
