Job Description

Do you have broad knowledge of employment, training and education opportunities for people who are vulnerable and may have experienced homelessness, plus a proven ability to build successful relationships with external agencies and professionals? Do you also have experience of recruiting and overseeing volunteers, then join Shelter as a Employment, Training, Education/Volunteer Coordinator and you could soon be playing a vital role within our Sheffield hub.
About Shelter A home is a fundamental human need, as essential as education or healthcare. Yet millions of people across Britain struggle on a daily basis with homelessness, bad housing conditions, soaring rents, discrimination and the threat of eviction. So, we are striving for change, with individuals, in communities, across society, and leading the way to a safe home. We need ambitious, individuals who are passionate about our cause to join us at this exciting time. This is your chance to play a part in the fundamental change we are striving to achieve.
At Shelter we are united by our purpose to defend the right to a safe home. Our enemy is the social injustice at the core of the escalating housing emergency. We believe that to win that fight, we must be representative of the people we are here to help and those who support our movement for change. In all our people decisions, we take pride in being inclusive, fair, equitable and transparent.
We have committed to combat racism both within and outside Shelter and welcome you on our journey to becoming a truly anti-racist organisation.

About the team

Specialising in emergency homelessness work, intensive support to children and families and people experiencing domestic abuse, and/or multiple disadvantage, Shelter Sheffield has been providing housing advice and support to the city’s residents for over 20 years. We offer a range of help to people in the community – including high intensity support, legal representation, housing advice, practical DIY assistance, and employment training and welfare benefits advice. This model ensures we can help an individuals or families to address issues that may be impacting on their ability to sustain accommodation and thrive within the community, such as domestic abuse, physical and mental health conditions, drug and alcohol use, income and money management.

About the role

There are two distinct components to this role - supporting people into education, training, employment and other positive activities and coordinating a volunteer programme for our Sheffield Hub. Day-to-day, you’ll work with clients who are trying to live independently and, in some cases, overcome the experience of homelessness. We’ll also rely on you to identify and keep up-to-date with ETEL opportunities in the city by developing relationships and networks with ETEL providers in order to help clients access opportunities. Offering appropriate information, advice and guidance to overcome barriers to employment, training and education, including signposting to support agencies and partners, will be important too. And, when it comes to developing and maintaining a relevant media presence or coordinating local volunteer involvement, including recruitment, induction, training and development pathways to ensure all volunteers have the tools and support they need to operate effectively, again, we’ll count on you.
We are happy to talk about flexible working, personal growth, and to promote a workplace where you can be yourself and achieve success based only on your merit.

About you

To succeed, you’ll need experience of working with vulnerable and/or people experiencing multiple disadvantages, as well as with volunteers, including coordinating aspects of the volunteer journey like recruitment, induction and ongoing support. You’ll also need the excellent all-round communication and interpersonal skills it takes to enable you to effectively manage volunteering relationships and liaise with a wide range of people. Proficiency using a range of IT tools to carry out your work, including Microsoft Office applications, Internet, email and social media etc. is also required, as is a full UK driving licence, access to a vehicle and a willingness to drive for work purposes.
