Job purpose
We are seeking a talented and enthusiastic Art and Design Technician to join our dynamic team. As a technician, you will play a crucial role in supporting students and staff in various art and design disciplines, ensuring the smooth operation of our facilities and fostering a vibrant creative environment. This is an excellent opportunity for an individual passionate about the arts and dedicated to supporting emerging artists and designers. This job description is written at a specific time and is subject to change as the demands of the Collegiate and the role develops. The role requires flexibility and adaptability and the employees of the Collegiate need to be aware that they may be asked to perform tasks and be given responsibilities not detailed in this job description.
Duties and responsibilities
You will be required to attend inset training days throughout the year, these are notified well in advance and may occur at the beginning or end of a holiday period, these are included in your salary.
Creative Arts Technician Duties
- Assist students and staff in using art and design equipment and tools, including but not limited to painting supplies, printmaking materials, digital design software, photography equipment, sculpture tools, and other specialized equipment.
- Maintain and organise art studios, workshops, and other creative spaces, ensuring a clean, safe, and well-stocked environment.
- Provide technical guidance and support to students, offering expertise and troubleshooting assistance across different art and design disciplines.
- Collaborate with staff members to develop and implement instructional materials, demonstrations, and workshops that enhance students' technical skills.
- Help coordinate and oversee the setup and dismantling of art exhibitions, ensuring proper handling and display of artwork.
- Assist in the maintenance and repair of art and design equipment, coordinating with external vendors as necessary.
- Stay up to date with emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in the art and design field, and share this knowledge with students and faculty.
- Ensuring the classrooms are equipped and prepared for lessons including the preparation of materials and equipment which may be required for demonstrations or practical work. Maintaining appropriate levels of materials and resources
- Supporting the class teacher with specific areas of expertise such as in the dark room, using sewing machines, use of workshop machinery
- Cleaning of equipment used by staff and pupils
- Inspecting classroom and workshop equipment, maintaining accurate records and reporting any damage to HOD
- Maintaining equipment in good working order and carrying out minor repairs where appropriate and within guidelines
- Working with and assisting the Technician team
- Assisting with the construction and / or modification of equipment including mounting and display
- Producing teaching aids, jigs and adaptations
- Assisting with the safe disposal of waste materials in line with relevant policies
- Where appropriate assisting teaching staff with first aid treatment of minor injuries and the maintenance of first aid equipment
- Assisting with the operation of an efficient system for stocking, transporting and distribution of all items used in the department.
- Ordering and inventory of consumables in the department in line with budgets.
- Ordering of 1 off items and equipment in line with the budgets
- Operating documentation systems (cataloguing, photocopying, filing, worksheets etc.).
- Assistance with preparations for Open Days, and attendance as necessary
- Good working knowledge of current Health and Safety requirements for working in creative/visual arts and design technology.
- Proactive in keeping an up to date working knowledge of Health and Safety , and updating risk assessments -arranging training with HOD/Senior Technician. Completing termly check lists to comply with H&S
- Help advise staff as well as students about the suitability or safety of certain projects or materials.
- Assisting teachers in lessons or helping to teach essential skills, for example supervising and advising the students in the darkroom/workshops whilst they produce their work and use the equipment.
- Helping set up and facilitate examinations ensuring students have suitable equipment.
- Cover- preparing materials and registers for the cover teacher, assisting in cover lessons with non- specialist cover teachers. Registering 6th form classes where no cover teacher is allocated.
- Weekend supervision of small groups as part of a team.
Qualifications/person specification
- A degree or diploma in Fine Art, 3D Design, or a related field is preferred
- Previous experience working in an art and design school, studio, or similar setting is highly desirable.
- Proficiency in using a wide range of art and design tools and equipment.
- Strong technical skills in areas such as painting, printmaking, digital design, photography, sculpture, fashion or other relevant disciplines
- Familiarity with various art and design software, such as Adobe Creative Suite, AutoCAD, or other industry-standard applications, is welcomed
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to multitask and prioritise tasks effectively.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with students, faculty, and staff members.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high standards of cleanliness, safety, and professionalism in art and design spaces.
