TxDOT's Ellis County Area Office is looking for a Transportation Engineer I, II, III or IV based in Waxahachie, TX. Join the TxDOT Ellis County Design Team in Waxahachie, TX where you will gain valuable experience and work on major and minor rehabilitation transportation projects! Transportation Engineer I: Performs transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design,
construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws,
policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities.
Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Transportation Engineer II: Performs complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Transportation Engineer III: Performs advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project
development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable
federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and
private entities. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are
rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Transportation Engineer IV: Performs highly advanced and complex transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, project development and design, construction, transportation/traffic operations and/or maintenance. Ensures compliance with applicable
federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials and
private entities. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.

Essential Duties:

Transportation Engineer I, II, III, or IV:

• Interprets maintenance standards, rules, methods, procedures, practices and policies.
• Performs engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
• Performs pavement designs and makes recommendations.
• Assists with design, computer operations and plan preparation.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional duties for a Transportation Engineer II to include:

• Performs complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
• Performs complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and assisting in transportation planning studies.

Additional duties for a Transportation Engineer III to include:

• Performs advanced and complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
• Performs advanced and complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and transportation planning studies.
• Performs complex hydrologic and hydraulic analysis of structures over waterways and summarizes the analysis in report form.

Additional duties for a Transportation Engineer IV to include:

• Performs highly advanced and complex engineering design work such as development of layouts, sketches, plans, specifications, estimates and contracts.
• Performs highly advanced and complex planning work such as plan review, calculations and transportation planning studies.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Transportation Engineer I, II, III, or IV - Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.

Experience:

Transportation Engineer I: 4 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).

Transportation Engineer II: 5 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).

Transportation Engineer III: 6 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).

Transportation Engineer IV: 7 years engineering, transportation engineering, or related engineering experience (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent).

• Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications

• Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
• Licensed Prof Engineer*
• If performing underwater bridge inspections: Must have Open Water Diver certification.
• For Bridge Inspection: Must have completed a comprehensive training course based on the Bridge Inspector's Training Manual or NICET Level III or IV certification in Bridge Safety Inspection within (1) year of date of hire.

• Professional engineers licensed in another state, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Competencies:

Transportation Engineer I, II, III, or IV:

• Highway construction design applications
• Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements
• Construction phasing and sequencing
• Applicable engineering workstations and applications to support efficient planning and design activities
• Design and plan preparation methods and requirements
• Construction engineering policies and procedures

Additional competencies for a Transportation Engineer III and IV to include:

• Hydrologic, hydraulic and geotechnical design activities and principles
• Pavement concepts, methods, policies and requirements

Additional competencies for a Transportation Engineer IV to include:

• Hydrologic and hydraulic engineering principles, practices and methods and the application of engineering theory

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

• Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
• Light work: Lift up to 20 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 10 lbs
• Standing-prolonged periods of time
• Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
• Fingering-picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand
• Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
