The primary purpose of the Chief Nurse, VA Care in the Community position is to execute leadership that is characterized by substantial and continuous responsibility and accountability for population groups or integrated programs that cross service and/or discipline lines, influence organizational mission and health care and responsibility for outcomes in Nursing Service. The incumbent participates in assessing the environment, forecasting trends, transmitting ideas and values, developing, and implementing policies. He/she is responsible for sound fiscal and resource management, program development, customer service/patient satisfaction, hiring decisions, employee relations, standards of care/practice and the work environment areas of direct responsibility. He/she actively manages and develops collaborative partnerships with clinicians, physicians, and administrative staff to achieve common goals. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Responsible for strategic planning, performance measures and is accountable for the overall operation of VA CITC and its programs.
• Establishes and maintains effective relationships with all levels of medical center personnel and relate effectively with customers, families, and the community as well as program and service leaders at the local and network levels.
• Assist nurse managers, health administration staff and advanced practitioners to carry out the functions and activities expected of them.
• Contribute ideas and recommendations for the establishment of standards of care, policies, and objectives for the enhancement of nursing organization wide.
• Assist in policymaking activities as related to customer service and the overall functioning of administrative and clinical programs.
• Collaborate with other health care staff to establish and maintain programs that cross service and/or discipline lines and influence organizational mission and health care.

• This position is not a Bargaining Unit position.
• The incumbent may be required to travel to other VA campuses and CBOC's.
• Current and former Federal employees must submit copies of their most recent SF-50, (Notice of Personnel Action). The SF-50 must identify the position title, series, grade, step, tenure and type of service (Competitive or Excepted). In some cases, more than one SF-50 may be required to show a higher grade previously held.
• The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will recommend the grade and salary for new appointments based on the candidate's education and experience. For internal selectees being promoted, the board will determine grade and HR will determine step in accordance with policy.
