HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES AGENCY

ANIMAL SERVICES
The Health and Human Services Agency's Animal Services provides field services to enforce state statutes and county ordinances regulating animal care and welfare, rabies control to investigate animal bites and human exposures to rabies, and shelter operations to house and care for stray, unwanted, or displaced animals.

THE OPPORTUNITY
Use your knowledge and skills to assist animals in your community. The Animal Shelter Attendant provides humane care to domestic and wild animals held at the County's animal shelter; cleans and maintains animal shelter facilities; evaluates animals for adoption; maintains computerized records; assists the public with adoptions, surrenders, and lost and found animals.

The selected candidate will have the opportunity to:
  • Place animals in appropriate shelter areas according to species and special requirements as directed.
  • Provide humane care of domestic and wild animals at the shelter; feed and medicates animals.
  • Bathe animals and perform related animal grooming and care.
  • Assist with minor surgical procedures performed within the shelter facility.
  • Maintain medical and behavioral records on all animals in care.
  • Assist the public in claiming lost animals or selecting animals for adoptions; assist in the handling of animals; describe animals' behavior and apparent training and habits.
  • Maintain computerized records and complete forms regarding care, feeding, and disposition of animals.
  • Maintain animal shelter, including cleaning and disinfecting kennels, cages, and equipment; wash dishes and laundry; take out garbage; perform custodial duties.
  • Assist in stocking food and shelter supplies, and maintaining inventory.

Any combination of the required experience, education, and training that would provide the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.

One (1) year of personal or professional experience working with or providing care to animals.

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a valid California or Nevada Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Must be eligible to obtain a veterinary assistant controlled substance permit within one (1) year from date of appointment.
  • Possession of a euthanasia certification is highly desirable.
  • Ability to obtain, a Euthanasia Training Certificate, within one (1) year from time of appointment, or upon conclusion of the first available certified training program, if more than one (1) year.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The County of El Dorado is recruiting applicants for Animal Shelter Attendant - Extra Help. This recruitment will establish a list for the purpose of filling current and future extra help vacancies for at least three (3) months.
  • There are currently (5) extra help vacancies in the Health and Human Services Agency - Community Services, located in Diamond Springs, CA. Extra help vacancies are made to maintain adequate coverage of work for short periods of time at frequent intervals, where employment is of a recurrent nature depending on the needs of the Agency; work may be seasonal, on-call, and/or for a limited duration. Extra help employees are not considered regular employees, therefore do not attain civil service status, and do not receive benefits or paid leaves; however, they do accrue sick leave consistent with the law. This extra help position may transition to a regular full-time employee if the conditions of Personnel Rules 1103.1 (Download PDF reader) exist.
