Job Description

As our new apprentice, you will be trained to the highest health, safety and environmental standards, to eventually perform maintenance work inside on/offshore wind turbines. You will become skilled at troubleshooting, replacing electrical and mechanical components and performing routine maintenance procedures.

What will the apprentice be doing?
As our new apprentice you will be supported within our renewables business, to build a strong foundation of capability that will enable future progression within the wind and wider renewables industry.The first year of the program is based at Grimsby Institute in Grimsby, where you will learn the basics of engineering and introduce you to wind turbine technology.

After successfully completing year one, you will be placed at one of our clients’ sites within the UK, but could be working on occasion in Europe or Asia in the future. During years two to four, you’ll support and eventually perform work inside a wind turbine.

Supported by your training and our team, your tasks will include:

What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
Level 3 Maintenance and Operations Technician (Wind Turbine Technician)
BTEC Level 3 Extended National Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering
Internal training program as part of the Swire Renewable Energy Wind Turbine Technician Competency framework (Including all GWO and safety training)
In addition to classroom training, successful applicants will take part in a broader programme of on-the-job learning:
- Develop practical, hands-on competencies
- Bespoke technical knowledge, underpinning practical training
- Health and safety
- Positive feedback to aid development

What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?
After successfully completing year one, you will then work at different client sites throughout the UK, and potentially Internationally. You’ll support and eventually perform work inside on/offshore wind turbines

Things to consider
Due to the nature of this work, you will be working at heights in excess of 100 meters, and should also be comfortable with sea travel. From September 2023, year one of the apprenticeship programme will consist of intensive practical/technical training at The Grimsby Institute (DN34 5AB). From year 2 of the programme you will enter the workplace, with mentoring from our experienced technical team. This will include flexible working from client sites at different locations in the UK, and could include international work in Europe, Taiwan and the USA. As such, you must be willing to travel and work away from home. Expected to work safely always, the main function of the role is to carry out a variety of manual tasks and fault diagnostics to ensure that the wind turbines are working reliably and at maximum efficiency. The work is carried out at sea, and on-shore, fixing complex machinery in the wind turbines, and communication and teamwork is therefore essential. The program requires a continuous focus on studies and ability to balance work and learning is vital.

Swire Renewable Energy (SRE) is a global provider of maintenance and management services in the renewable energy sector, specialising in both wind turbine and solar park maintenance.  The company also offers autonomous drone blade inspection services through its portfolio company – BladeInsight.  The business is presently operating in 20+ countries and employs 320 office and technical staff around the world.  During the European summer, out technician resources presently expand to over 450.  Technicians and maintenance are the centre of our business.  They offer a wide range of electrical, mechanical and wind turbine operations and maintenance solutions for our clients, and have had extensive experience in all aspects of turbine and solar maintenance, including Blade repairs, Turbine component exchange and repairs, pre-assembly and installation work, power and substation maintenance and commissioning, and ongoing servicing.  The client base includes wind turbine manufacturers, utilities, owners and operators of wind and solar farms and other renewable energy assets.  Swire acquired ALL NRG in Denmark to increase its participation in the renewable sector.  It retains investments in Cadeler, a major Danish Wind Farm Installation Vessel owning company, and Argent Energy, a waste oil to biofuels company based in the United Kingdom.  The company focus is on maintaining renewable energy infrastructure both on and offshore, and this includes wind farms, hydro and solar plants, renewable infrastructure, and expansion of their domestic onshore electrical maintenance and on and offshore service business.
