Job summary

UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) provides strategic leadership and vision for protecting and improving the nation’s health. It will achieve this through the application of research, knowledge and skills. UKHSA is an executive agency of the Department of Health. It is a distinct delivery organisation with operational autonomy to advise and support government, local authorities and the NHS in a professionally independent manner.

The TB Unit is responsible for the national surveillance of tuberculosis and leprosy, and gives clinical advice and support to local teams.

Job description

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

  • Conduct routine maintenance and management tasks of: National surveillance system databases (NTBS), National Mycobacterium lab database, Mycobacterium bovis database, Public Health in Prisons log, multi-drug resistant TB (MDR-TB) database, mortality database and any other as
  • Resolve any data quality problems resulting from the feeds of data from the National Mycobacterium database
  • Contribute to resolving data cleaning issues with NTBS users and the surveillance team and contribute to the development of improved data quality assurance methods
  • Help develop queries needed for the enquiry and analysis of TB pre- and post-entry TB screening data and matching with NTBS.
  • Complete tasks as designated by the Unit data manager towards: (i) development and integration of a national database for monitoring screening of latent-TB infection in new-entrants to the UK; (ii) database development for pre-entry to the UK TB disease screening.
  • Provide support for the extraction of information from the databases, e.g. carry out searches of data for the preparation of tables, for reports or in answer to specific information requests.

Person specification

We are looking for an exceptional Data Quality and Information Officer:

It is important through your application and Statement of Suitability of no more than 700 words that you give evidence of knowledge and or experience of the following criteria:

Essential

  • Educated to degree level or demonstrable equivalent acumen
  • Data management, data quality and data flows and quality assurance processes
  • Using Microsoft Access & Excel products to an advanced level
  • Using SQL to query data at a basic level
  • Working on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Importance of documentation and version control
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of querying databases.
  • An aptitude to manage and analyse complex data.
  • An aptitude and willingness to use and apply information systems/processes
  • Ability to analyse and interpret information, pre-empt and evaluate issues, and recommend appropriate actions to address the issues
  • Sound numeracy skills and an understanding of data presentation.
  • Good attention to detail, methodical with excellent organizational skills
  • Awareness of data governance, data protection and confidentiality requirements
  • Good interpersonal skills and experience of working as part of a team
  • An understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity and good working relationships, both in terms of day-to-day working practices, but also in relation to management systems

Desirable

  • Using Microsoft Sharepoint and Teams
  • Using SQL Server Management Suite
  • Experience of version control management using GitHub or similar tools
  • Principles of database structure and design
  • Programming using one or more computer programming languages (basic level) e.g. git, bash (Experience of more advanced programming languages such as python highly advantageous)
  • Data analysis and interpretation
  • Using Power BI or other business intelligence tools
  • Experience in record linkage / matching between different
  • Experience of working with the NHS or Public Health or Office of National Statistics
  • Experience in health related or scientific work
  • Good all-round knowledge of Infectious diseases, in particular TB

Selection process details

STAGE 1 - APPLICATION & SIFT:

STAGE 2 – INTERVIEW

This competition will involve an interview either by video or face to face.

As part of the process, candidates will be invited to interview which will involve an in-depth discussion of your previous experience and professional competence in relation to the criteria set out in the Person Specification.

Your Statement of Suitability should outline your skills, experience, and achievements, providing evidence of your suitability for the role, with reference to the essential criteria (outlined in the person specification section).

You will also be asked to provide information within the ‘Employer/ Activity history’ section of the application form. This is equivalent to the information you would provide on a CV, setting out your career history.
