Kent & Essex Police have recently transformed their digital service to adapt and take advantage of the latest technology and infrastructure available. An exciting opportunity has arisen for individual(s) to undertake the role of Digital Forensic Technician within Kent & Essex Digital Services.
Currently the designated contractual workplace for the Digital Forensic Technician role in Kent is located at Kent Police Sutton Road, Maidstone, but please be aware that this location is moving to Ashford Police Station during 2023. Please note that any excess travel costs from the existing contractual workplace to any future contractual workplace will not be paid and applicants are advised to take potential travel mileage increases into consideration when deciding to apply.

Digital devices and information communication technology are present in almost every investigation the Police Service undertakes. These range from complex computer platforms to mobile phone handsets, games consoles, digital CCTV systems and satellite navigation. As digital devices continue to evolve it will be critical that you are able to adapt and learn new emerging technologies to meet the requirements of the role.
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who can demonstrate technical ability with digital devices. You will have been educated to A level standard and have experience of working within a digital arena and/or experience of working within a policing environment.
The role involves the collection & extraction of digital evidence using standard operating procedures in support of criminal investigations. You will be able to provide advice and guidance to officers and staff concerning the proportionate extraction of digital data. This role requires you to utilise streamlined, targeted extraction techniques or triage capability of seized digital devices to enable faster charging decisions.
You will be required to adhere to the quality standard ISO 17025 and understand how this affects the role. You will be required to develop and maintain your competence under these requirements ensuring best practice is shared amongst colleagues. It is expected that you will update your technical knowledge of Digital Forensic procedures and advancements within the Digital Forensic field.
To balance these technical attributes, you will need to be a highly motivated team player with good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. You will have the ability to manage a high caseload and be able to produce high quality reports or statements for court.
In this role you will be dealing with sensitive and distressing information which requires you to have a high degree of emotional resilience. You will also be required to work to tight deadlines and be able to multi-task, dealing with competing demands and court requests.
The Digital Forensic Technician role is shift based, you will be working a 6-week pattern where you will be required to work 1 weekend in 6. The shifts are detailed below:
AM shift: 0700 – 1500
PM shift: 1200 – 2000
Weekend shift: 0800 – 1600

Note for potential candidates - It is currently proposed that the Kent Police, Sutton Road site will be sold and all members of staff currently working there will be redeployed to other workplaces and/or required to work in a more agile way. All new staff appointed to roles currently based at Kent Police, Sutton Road after 25 May 2020 and before the closure of the site will be accepting the contract knowing that their workplace will change. They will not be eligible to claim for any additional ‘home to work’ mileage costs or additional public transport costs incurred from the requirement to travel their new contractual workplace. The only exceptions to this will be for existing internal staff where the new role is a promotional opportunity or a move internally with the Kent Police, Sutton Road site (i.e. from one role based at that site to another role based at that site).
