We are looking for someone to join the team to lead in the ongoing development and improvement of our complex Reward, Compensation and Benefits strategy and civilian HR policy. We are looking for a skilled reward practitioner to join our small and friendly civilian reward team.

This role offers a significant amount of autonomy and flexibility. You will have the opportunity to have a real impact and set the reward agenda for covering 50,000 civilian staff working across the UK and overseas.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

As a Senior Reward Manager, you will be responsible for a portfolio of work within the Reward Team, key to the overall delivery of the Defence Reward strategy, involving all aspects of remuneration, including benchmarking, pay and bonus annual review, benefits, and executive remuneration. This will include working collaboratively with the wider Civilian HR and Policy teams on cross Defence initiatives.

Essential to this position is your ability to develop and foster strong relationships with a range of stakeholders across, and outside, the organisation. You will have an eye for detail, enjoy analysis and creative problem-solving, and have strong written and verbal presentation skills. You will be a strong team player with experience managing and delivering against multiple projects in a busy environment. You will be customer-focused, professional and resilient.

The Job holder will:

  • Take ownership of key work portfolios within the wider pay and reward agenda, including developing future pay flexibility business cases, assessing reforms to existing pay mechanisms, terms and conditions of service, employee benefits and pensions scheme management & reform.
  • Provide policy advice on complex pay casework to our HR Shared Services team, MoD arm’s length bodies and senior stakeholders.
  • Conduct analysis and producing regular statistical metrics, as well as generating reports, data and management information for individual projects and decision making throughout the business.
  • Development of reward policies that reflect public sector pay policy, legislation, the current and future strategic needs of the department and the wider political context we operate within.
  • Engage with Trade Unions on reward matters through consultations and negotiation.
  • Participate in UK and Civil Service networking forums to further enhance MOD market knowledge
  • Form strong networks across the business and government. Building respected relationships with key stakeholders in Cabinet Office and HM Treasury, plus DG Finance.
  • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to valuing and respecting the diversity of others.

Person specification

Prior experience of working in a pay and reward function, alongside excellent analytical and excel skills is preferable. You should also have well developed experience of working closely with Trade Union and Shared Services colleagues.

Essential Criteria

  • Experience of working with/in a pay and reward function in support of organisational objectives
  • Strong analytical skills and be advanced with using excel. Able and enjoy working with and manipulating large volumes of data, and presentation to stakeholders
  • Great stakeholder management and communication skills, and experience of applying these skills in complex systems and an ability to influence and present to varied stakeholders
  • Strategic thinking, and an ability to leverage individual and team relationships to deliver overall strategy.
  • Experience of leading/supporting Trade Union negotiations and consultation

Desirable Criteria

  • A CIPD qualification, or working towards one, is desirable although not essential.
  • Experience of the development of reward approaches to existing frameworks and building digital capability
  • An appreciation of the constraints of working in a public sector environment and the wider political context we operate within.
  • An ability to communicate complex messages to a range of specialists, non-specialists, civilian and military personnel
