We have an exciting opportunity for a Policy and Regulation Adviser to join us at the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency and we’d love to hear from you!

Job description

As a policy and regulation subject matter expert, the post holder will support the development of policy, from inception through to delivery. The post holder be familiar with the policy development process and the regulatory change process.

The post holder will have strong drafting and briefing skills, and will help manage the drafting of ministerial and other official correspondence, submissions and briefings for senior officials, ministers and other government departments.

The post holder will provide support to senior leaders when representing DVSA at various meetings, working with officials across Government to advise on all aspects of vocational/ rider/ driver testing policy, the strategic direction of driver testing in the UK and relevant regulatory developments. The post holder will work with senior leaders to ensure strong links with external stakeholders and industry.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop, negotiate, draft, implement, interpret and review the policy and legislation for vocational driver testing and work with service and product leads on policy delivery.
  • Ensure that policies align to DVSA, DfT and wider Governmental/Ministerial direction and strategy, keeping road safety as a priority at all times.
  • Exploring innovative and evidence based solutions, and responding proactively to changed circumstances and revised priorities, bearing in mind the stakeholders involved.
  • Support senior leaders when representing DVSA at various meetings and events. Work with officials across Government to advise on all aspects of Vocational Testing policy, the strategic direction of driver testing in the UK and relevant regulatory developments.
  • Actively support policy development from inception through to delivery.

Person specification

About you:

You will bring superb communication skills, with the ability to clearly consult, guide and deliver robust and proportionate recommendations to a wide range of stakeholders. You are able to adapt your approach dependent upon the audience, breaking down complex messages in a way that makes them understandable to non-specialists. You will influence decisions and not be afraid to provide challenge.

You can interpret legislation and deliver innovative and new ways of working. You have a keen eye for detail with confidence in drafting quality and high-level documents that are accessible to the reader.

You are extremely adaptable and flexible, with the aptitude to adjust to varying business requirements and ever-changing work demands

We would love someone to join us who can quickly build rapport with key stakeholders both internally and externally.

Additional Information:

A minimum of 40% of your working time should be spent at your principal workplace, although requirements to attend other locations for official business, or carry out detached duty in another DfT workplace, will also count towards this level of attendance.

You will be expected to travel to other DVSA offices on a monthly basis where an overnight stay may be required.

Whilst we welcome applications from those looking to work with us on a part time basis, there is a business requirement, for the successful candidate to be able to work at least 30 hours per week over 4 days.
