The Department for Business and Trade is leading preparations for the UK’s participation at Expo 2025 Osaka, taking place 13 April 2025 - 13 October 2025. The Expo provides a unique opportunity to promote the UK’s global leadership, economy, culture, businesses and international policies on a global stage. The event is expected to attract around 28 million visitors overall and will be an important milestone showing the importance of foreign policy bilateral relationships between the UK and Japan.

This is an exciting role working as part of the delivery team planning and delivery of the Osaka Expo 2025 – a high-profile, cross-Whitehall project with a budget of between £60-70 million.

We are operating within tight timescales to be able to design and construct a Pavilion in Japan and deliver our presence at World Expo Osaka 2025. DBT are in the process of establishing a project delivery team to ensure the Pavilion and event management is delivered to achieve its objectives, on time and on budget.

This role is in the UK pavilion’s Creative and Event Programme team. The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring the International Content Design Supply (ICDS) suppliers delivers the conceptual content and creative aspects of the UK pavilion
  • Developing and delivering the Events Programme for the UK’s presence at World Expo and managing the Events management contracted supplier.
  • Supporting the team to prepare for tasks, dependencies, and activities across the programme to enable effective delivery on time and on budget.

There will be a requirement to ensure Government, Sponsors and Business are engaged and ensures high quality delivery of high profile UK presence at Expo 2025 on time and on budget.

Job description

The successful candidate would be able to:

  • Act as a point of contact with the ICDS supplier ensuring HMG’s objectives and ambitions are fully woven into the content design for UK Pavilion. Continuously managing and evaluating progress and development of content across the project including with HMG partners and sponsors.
  • Support the design, develop and manage high profile events programme for UK presence at Osaka 2025 in conjunction with variety of key stakeholders including OGD funders, sponsors and Post.
  • Support the design of the Specification for any Events Management Contract that may be required to support the Pavilions programme and to manage the delivery of that contract once in place.
  • Support the development and implementation Government Operations workstream – management of high profile and complex stakeholders to ensure seamless coordination of Ministerial and other VIP engagement with UK presence at Expo.

Hybrid working

The role will be based in either Darlington or London. You will be asked to express a location preference during the application process.

Informal hybrid working arrangements will be available as agreed with the vacancy manager and in line with the requirements of the role.

Most DBT employees will be working a hybrid pattern, spending 2-3 days a week (pro rata) in an office, on average. If your office location is London, you will be eligible to receive London weighting.

  • Insight into the delivery of public facing events and cultural experiences that encourage audiences to travel, study and visit the UK, raising public perceptions of the UK internationally.
  • Experience in delivering projects and campaigns on UK’s International ambitions.
  • Experience of stakeholder management and has skills and confidence to orchestrate engagement with diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Ability to work flexibly due to the nature of the programme and good attention to detail particularly in presenting information for internal and external audiences.
