We have an exciting opportunity for someone to become our new Centre Manager at our Wildlife Centre at Mallydams Wood. The Centre Manager is responsible for the operation of the Wildlife Centre at Mallydams Wood as well as working in partnership with the education team.
This is a unique site with a wildlife rehabilitation centre seeing 1000's of wildlife casualties each year, an education centre with overnight accommodation for groups, and ancient woodland.
A key part of the role is ensuring that the site is providing the best quality wildlife care and rehabilitation, in line with RSPCA policies and best practice. You will also be expected to collaborate in the continual development of policies and process. The role involves being an effective leader to the staff & volunteers, leading on recruitment, overseeing and performing training, and the development of the team. The role involves budgetary control, strong leadership, collaborating with the education team based on site, managing the woodland, and many more activities.
Mallydams Wood site is one of our four Wildlife Centres, and home to our flagship Prevention and Education Hub. The Centre Manager and the veterinary team will work with the other wildlife sites to ensure a consistent approach is in place for the rehabilitation of the animals in your care, as well as working in a safe and biosecure way. The successful candidate will need to be able to lead the on site wildlife team effectively, giving them guidance on best practice, coaching them and steering them to effective development, and being part of overseeing the everyday operation through the leadership and veterinary team. They will also work with the RSPCA Education team on site in a collaborative manner and explore ways to further enrich the educational offer as part of the society's wider Prevention through education strategy. They will work collaboratively with the other wildlife centre managers, the Society's experts, to ensure that all of the Society's wildlife services are up to date and operating in line with best practice
Whats involved?
- Line management of the Wildlife Centre team, completing reviews and updates, addressing any performance issues and ensuring ongoing training and development
- Taking responsibility for the day to day health and safety of staff, volunteers, Education team, and the general public
- Assisting with the recruitment and training of all wildlife staff and volunteers. Supporting the clinical teams through relevant CPD & training. The Manager should be able to utilise their staff's skills, experience and passions to the benefit of both the animal welfare, staff experience and wider RSPCA vision
- Working collaboratively, as part of a team of wildlife experts, vets and operational managers, to ensure the RSPCA is a leader in wildlife rehabilitation.
- Assisting with the management of contractors
- Finance management to include cash reconciliation & ordering
- Implementing HR policies and procedures
- Ensuring animal welfare standards are being maintained in accordance with the RSPCA Licensing Scheme
- Ensuring correct procedures are being followed for intake, assessment, rehabilitation and euthanasia
- Promoting fundraising and publicity opportunities and building relationships with the media, Branches, volunteers and general public
- Role model leadership excellence inline with our framework
- Look for opportunities to meet the welfare needs of animals that come in to the care of the RSPCA
- Working with the operational team and veterinary teams to support an effective approach to Avian Influenza and other zoonotic diseases
- Oversee the ancient woodland within the site. Develop a plan for the effective management of the area aligned with the needs of the education team
- Work in partnership with the Community Engagement Manager to identify and facilitate opportunities for teams across site to contribute to prevention through education activities.
About you

- Operational management experience including line management, project management, budget control / management, data management & media.
- High level of presentation skills and proven experience of communicating with a wide range of audiences.
- Animal Welfare or Wildlife Qualifications desirable
- Relevant experience in the field of wildlife rehabilitation.
- Capable of understanding the difficulties & challenges faced by the team on a daily basis
- Strong leadership skills, resilient, and able to influence others
- Open to change & new ways of working
- Able to share experience & expertise with the team on site as well as the wider audience across the RSPCA
- Preferable that you have some experience of the charity sector
- Preferable that you have some experience of building projects, refits, or improvement works
- Preferable, An interest in and/or experience of animal welfare and/or natural history education. Recognise the role that education and community empowerment can play in encouraging positive behaviour change for animals.
