About the Role

The Barrack Lane Medical Centre has an exciting opportunity for a hardworking and enthusiastic paramedic to join our practice. The practice has a branch surgery in Ipswich and the post-holder will be required to work at both sites. This role is offered on a full-time or part-time basis.


The main responsibilities of the role include:
  • To provide assessment, diagnosis and treatment at first point of contact by attending to patients, according to patients’ needs either in the practice or patient homes;
  • To support, and continue the development of an on-the-day routine and emergency patient service in the practice;
  • To accurately triage and prioritise patients, including in both emergency situations and telephone triage, demonstrating the use of a variety of techniques to elicit the history of an event/illness, including past medical and drug history;
  • To evaluate clinical information from examination and history taking, and initiate appropriate treatment and/or referral;
  • To review the effectiveness of the treatment provided, making changes where necessary to improve patient outcomes;
  • To maintain accurate clinical records in an efficient manner.
The role will offer the post-holder the opportunity to build on their experience of working effectively within a multi-disciplinary, healthcare team, as they will work alongside fellow professionals, within the practice, in support of one another.

About the Candidate

If you are an experienced paramedic wanting a new challenge, we would love to hear from you. You will have the following skills and experience:
  • Be a registered paramedic, with current HCPC registration and have post-registration experience, ideally with some being in primary care;
  • Minor Injuries and Minor Illness courses will be provided if not already attended;
  • Be able to effectively assess, plan, treat and refer patients;
  • Be able to evaluate patient care confidently;
  • Have experience of working to protocols and guidelines;
  • To exhibit excellent verbal and non-verbal communication skills;
  • Have the ability to make clear decisions with confidence and communicate these effectively;
  • Understanding of the need to work within the parameters of one's own training and capability, according to the Health and Care Professions Council;
  • Experience of autonomous practice working and multi-professional team working;
  • Can demonstrate a broad and sound knowledge of complex and common conditions in primary care in both adults and children.

About Us

Barrack Lane Medical Centre is a busy practice in the town centre of Ipswich, Suffolk. We have a practice population of approximately 20,000 patients. The practice is based on two sites, the main surgery in the middle of the town and a branch surgery at Stoke Park in Ipswich.

The practice has a clinical team including GPs, advanced nurse practitioners and care practitioners, pharmacists, physicians associate, paramedics, pharmacy technicians and a team of practice nurses and HCA. This team is supported by an administrative, coding and care navigating team.

Barrack Lane is a training practice. The practice trains GPs and medical students from university (UEA) to help provide doctors for the future.

Barrack Lane is part of a primary care network (PCN) with Ivry Street Medical Centre in Ipswich; the two practices cover a population of approximately 33,000 patients. A PCN allows practices to share resources and offer an enhanced service to our patient. The PCN employs care co-ordinators and social prescribers to work with patients helping them to access the best care.

The PCN is very proud to have offered a vaccination service during Covid-19 and carried out just under 100,000 vaccinations to our own patients and patients of other Suffolk Practices, including vaccinations for patients at home.

The practice operates the SystmOne clinical system, have a history of high QOF achievement and a CQC rating of Good across all domains.
