Job description
We are the Environment Agency. Working with Government, councils, businesses, and communities, we create a better place for people and wildlife. Acting to reduce the impacts of climate change is at the heart of everything we do.

Are you looking for an opportunity to make a real difference to the environment and how we manage Water Resources? We are looking for a technical leader with strong knowledge of Water Resources regulation.

The successful candidate will need to work across Water, Land & Biodiversity Teams as well as with national teams and directorates, thinking strategically to drive forward delivery through engagement with colleagues, partners and stakeholders.

You’ll be working across the WLB Leadership Team, alongside Team Leaders and other technical specialists, to ensure the prioritisation of our work, ensuring we understand work pressures and provide a clear message to our teams. Using your knowledge and influencing skills, you will help West Midlands deliver its strategies and achieve environmental outcomes. The successful candidate should also have the flexibility to adapt to different work streams and an understanding of other sectors such as Agriculture and Water Quality is advantageous.

This is a hybrid role, working at least 40% of the time away from home (for full time workers this is at least 2 days per week). You’ll have flexibility to choose which days and locations.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role. As a Water Resources specialist, you will be expected to contribute to any Dry Weather / Drought incident response.
The team
The role sits within the Land & Water Team in West Midlands who regulate abstraction licences and Water Quality discharges to ensure compliance and protection of the environment. As part of the Water, Land and Biodiversity department, the Land and Water teams work closely with other teams within the area to analyse data, investigate environmental issues and identify remediation actions.
Experience/skills required
We are looking for enthusiastic, self-motivated applicants, who see that providing great leadership is as important as using their specialist technical knowledge to protect people and the environment. Through experience to date, you will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Ability to deliver through others

  • Experience of coaching and mentoring others

  • Evidence of planning and implementing actions to achieve corporate and environmental objectives

  • Experience of influencing external customers and internal colleagues

  • Experience of interpreting technical guidance and adapting information to be appropriate for different audiences

  • Experience of delivering environmental compliance and/or environmental outcomes in accordance with a relevant legislative regime

  • Willingness to travel across the area
Contact and additional information
Everyone starting in a new role in the West Midlands Area will be welcomed into the team and given all the training and support you need to succeed.

We have a range of environmental and flood incident roles you can volunteer for, including out of hours duty roles.

If you would like to discuss this role, please contact Rebecca Rogers, Avon & Lower Severn Land and Water Team Leader on rebecca.rogers@environment-agency.gov.uk

You can also download the candidate pack for more information.

Interviews will be held w/c 12 June 2023.

We’re committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns, so please include any information regarding your preferred working arrangements on your application.
